Riding/Writing the line: Keith Haring, race, and the performance of desire by Ricardo Montez( )

2 editions published in 2007 in English and held by 5 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

While the dissertation focuses on Keith Haring and his art, the project develops a model for thinking about the function of race in the production of desire and how this surfaces in contemporary American popular culture. Haring's artistic expression is analyzed in light of the urban stages, street inspirations, and consuming audiences crucial to Haring's development and increasing popularity throughout the 1980's. In particular I look to Haring's artistic and intimate exchanges with people of color as means to explore Haring's desire for non-whiteness and the kinds of potentiality that desire produces. The lines of potential that arise in Haring's apprehension of difference--those trajectories of possibility he imagines in bodies of color--are indicative of the inextricable relationship between race and desire. They are simultaneous productions that are evident in the visual manifestation of Haring's art, it's circulation, and the ways it is codified in a larger public sphere. Haring's desire, as conditioned by difference and a systemic racial violence, engenders mechanisms of potential and subjugation through a visual production of otherness
