Internet telephony by Lee W McKnight( )

15 editions published in 2001 in English and held by 1,990 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Internet telephony is the integration and convergence of voice and data networks, services, and applications. The rapidly developing technology can convert analog voice input to digital data, send it over available networked channels, and then convert it back to voice output. Traditional circuit-switching networks such as telephone lines can be used together with packet-switching networks such as the Internet, thereby merging communication modes such as email, voice mail, fax, pager, real-time human speech, and multimedia videoconferencing into a single integrated system. Because Internet telephony allows the interchangeable and seamless use of phones, computers, personal digital assistants, TV cables, wireless, and Web technology, myriad combinations become possible. The transformation of the Internet from a network application using phone lines to a general communications infrastructure through which voice is but one of many data types offered has a wide impact on applications, architectures, networks, economics, public policy, industry structures, regulation, and service providers. This book explores these and other issues, and considers future scenarios as Internet telephony continues to alter the communications landscape. Contributors David D. At the nexus of cybersecurity and public policy : some basic concepts and issues( )

2 editions published in 2014 in English and held by 1,019 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"According to this report, cybersecurity is a never-ending battle; threats will evolve as adversaries adopt new tools and techniques to compromise security. Cybersecurity is therefore an ongoing process that needs to evolve as new threats are identified. At the Nexus of Cybersecurity and Public Policy is a call for action to make cybersecurity a public safety priority. For a number of years, the cybersecurity issue has received increasing public attention; however, most policy focus has been on the short-term costs of improving systems. In its explanation of the fundamentals of cybersecurity and the discussion of potential policy responses."--

Distributed computer systems : structure and semantics by Liba Svobodova( Book )

6 editions published between 1979 and 1981 in English and held by 12 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This report describes an ongoing project in the area of design of distributed systems. The goal is to develop an effective programming system that will support well-structured design, implementation, maintenance and control of distributed processing applications. This programming system combines a powerful high level language and operating system features, and addresses the underlying system problems that affect the reliability and security perceived on the application level. The report presents a conceptual model of distributed computation, and, in the context of this model, discusses our approaches to inter-node communication and cooperation, reliability, and protection. One of the basic goals of our project is to allow the application programmer to work with application-oriented entities. Thus, inter-node messages, error handling and protection constraints will all be expressible in application oriented terms. The report concludes with some examples of the language constructs and an outline of the future research under this project. (Author)

Designing an internet by David D Clark( Book )

1 edition published in 2018 in English and held by 6 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

How do you design an internet? The architecture of the current Internet is the product of basic design decisions made early in its history. What would an internet look like if it were designed, today, from the ground up? In this book, MIT computer scientist David Clark explains how the Internet is actually put together, what requirements it was designed to meet, and why different design decisions would create different internets. He does not take today's Internet as a given but tries to learn from it, and from alternative proposals for what an internet might be, in order to draw some general conclusions about network architecture

Cyberspace and international relations : the co-evolution dilemma by Nazli Choucri( Book )

1 edition published in 2018 in English and held by 3 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"International relations in the 21st century is starkly different than in previous centuries, and the diference is cyberspace. The network is shaping international relations and in turn being shaped by the concerns and challenges associated with it. This book offfers a unique and foundational analysis of the co-evolution of cyberspace and international relations and the variety of challenges that arise for individuals, organizations, and states. The truly intriguing alliance here is of two eminent scholars, Choucri and Clark -- one an expert on the theory of international relations, and the other an architect of the internet who brings deep technical, design, and structural insights to the analysis"--
An Input/Output Architecture for Virtual Memory Computer Systems by David D Clark( Book )

2 editions published between 1973 and 1974 in English and held by 3 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In many large systems, user I/O must be performed for the user by the system, in order to assure such system goals as security, response, and efficiency. However, reduced overhead and increased flexibility would result if the user could perform his I/O directly. This thesis presents a design for an I/O subsystem architecture which, in the context of a segmented, paged, time-shared computer system, allows the user direct access to I/O devices. Some conclusions of this thesis are: (1) that in order to provide a coherent program structure, I/O operations should be contained in a separate I/O process, (2) that to allow the user to refer to his devices in a simple fashion while protecting his devices from other users, the I/O device should be represented to the user as a segment, (3) that the virtual memory can meet the timing needs of the I/O system without compromising its own functions by the use of time limits on the duration of the I/O operations, and (4) that interrupts should not be part of the user environment, but should be hidden from the programmer, so that the I/O program he constructs is sequential rather than interrupt driven in structure.
