The book begins by deriving connections between scattering amplitudes and Grassmannian geometry from first principles before introducing novel physical and mathematical ideas in a systematic manner accessible to both physicists and mathematicians. The principle players in this process are on-shell functions which are closely related to certain sub-strata of Grassmannian manifolds called positroids - in terms of which the classification of on-shell functions and their relations becomes combinatorially manifest. Two of the major questions left unanswered by the Standard Model of particle physics have to do with hierarchies of mass scales. The first is the flavor problem: what determines the masses of the quarks and leptons, and why do they span such a large range, e.g. why is the top quark 3 $\times$ 10$\sp5$ times heavier than the electron? The second is the gauge hierarchy problem: why is the weak scale seventeen orders of magnitude smaller than the Planck scale? This problem is exacerbated by quadratically divergent radiative corrections to the Higgs potential, which destabilize the weak scale and necessitate an O(10$\sp{-34})$ fine-tuning in the fundamental parameters of the theory to to explain the ratio $M\sb{Z}/M\sb{Pl} \sim 10\sp{-17}.$

Dr. Nima Arkani-Hamed, Stanford Linear Accelerator Center, Stanford University. One of the major clues pointing to physics beyond the Standard Model is the hierarchy problem: why is gravity so feeble in strength compared to the weak interactions? We have recently proposed a new framework for solving this problem in which the fundamental Planck scale, where gravity unites in strength with the other interactions, is brought down to the electroweak scale in the presence of new sub-millimeter dimensions. This framework is experimentally viable, surviving laboratory, astrophysical and cosmological constraints. It opens up the exciting possibility that current and future accelerators will probe quantum gravitational effects and that deviations from Newtonian gravity may soon be observed in new sub-millimeter measurements of gravitational strength forces. The large space in the extra dimensions is a new arena in which to address other mysteries of the Standard Model, such as the origin of the quark, lepton and neutrino masses

In the new picture, the nature of gravity and space itself is modified by invoking the existence of large new spatial dimensions, perhaps as big as a millimeter in size. This allows gravity to unite with the other interactions near 10[̂17] cm, nullifying the stability crisis and predicting that quantum gravitational physics, such as the production of strong gravitational radiation, black holes and perhaps string excitations, will be accessible to the next generation of particle accelerators. The greatest embarrasment in theoretical physics is the at least 60 order of magnitude discrepancy between the predicted and observed value of the vacuum energy of the universe, otherwise known as the cosmological constant.
