Measures of association for cross classifications by Leo A Goodman( Book )

23 editions published between 1954 and 1979 in English and held by 554 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In 1954, prior to the era of modem high speed computers, Leo A. Goodman and William H. Kruskal published the fmt of a series of four landmark papers on measures of association for cross classifications. By describing each of several cross classifications using one or more interpretable measures, they aimed to guide other investigators in the use of sensible data summaries. Because of their clarity of exposition, and their thoughtful statistical approach to such a complex problem, the guidance in this paper is as useful and important today as it was on its publication 25 years ago. in a cross-classification by a single number inevita Summarizing association bly loses information. Only by the thoughtful choice of a measure of association can one hope to lose only the less important information and thus arrive at a satisfactory data summary. The series of four papers reprinted here serve as an outstanding guide to the choice of such measures and their use

Statistics by example : weighing chances by Joint Committee on the Curriculum in Statistics and Probability( Book )

5 editions published in 1973 in English and Undetermined and held by 12 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Part of a series of four pamphlets providing problems in probability and statistics taken from real-life situations, this booklet develops probability methods through random numbers, simulations, and simple probability models, and presents the idea of scatter and residuals for analyzing complex data. The pamphlet was designed for a student having a background in notions of probability and in elementary algebra. Fourteen different problem situations arising from the areas of biology, business, English, social sciences, physical sciences, sports, and mathematics are included. For other booklets and teachers' guides in this series, see se 016 798 through se 016 805. (dt)

4 editions published in 1973 in English and held by 12 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Part of a series of four pamphlets providing real-life problems in probability and statistics for the secondary school level, this booklet shows how to organize data in tables and graphs in order to get and to exhibit messages. Elementary probability concepts are also introduced. Fourteen different problem situations arising from biology, business, social sciences, and sports are included. This booklet was designed for students having a background knowledge of arithmetic, rates, and percentages. For other booklets and teachers' guides in this series, see se 016 798 through se 016 805. Statistics by example : finding models by Joint Committee on the Curriculum in Statistics and Probability( Book )

2 editions published in 1973 in English and held by 10 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This booklet, part of a series of four which provide problems in probability and statistics for the secondary school level, is aimed at aiding the student in developing models as structure for data and in learning how to change models to fit real-life problems. Twelve different problem situations arising from biology, business, English, physical sciences, social sciences, and mathematics are included. The booklet was designed for students with a background in elementary probability and intermediate algebra. For other booklets and teachers' guides in this series, see se 016 798 through se 016 805. Statistics by example, detecting patterns by Joint Committee on the Curriculum in Statistics and Probability( Book )

3 editions published in 1973 in English and held by 10 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This booklet is part of a series of four pamphlets, each intended to stand alone, which provide problems in probability and statistics at the secondary school level. Twelve different real-life examples (written by professional statisticians and experienced teachers) have been collected in this booklet to illustrate the ideas of mean, variation, and standard deviation of sets of data; certain probability distributions such as the normal, the binomial, and the hypergeometric; the central limit theorem; hypothesis testing, particularly the chi-square test; contingency tables; transforming data for linearity; and the method of least squares for fitting curves to data. The booklet was designed for students having a background of intermediate algebra and elementary probability. For other booklets and teachers' guides in this series, see se 016 799 through se 016 805. (dt)
