Special functions by George E Andrews( Book )

23 editions published between 1999 and 2013 in 3 languages and held by 648 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This treatise presents an overview of special functions, focusing primarily on hypergeometric functions and the associated hypergeometric series, including Bessel functions and classical orthogonal polynomials. The basic building block of the functions studied in this book is the gamma function. In addition to relatively new work on gamma and beta functions, such as Selberg's multidimensional integrals, a number of important but relatively unknown nineteenth century results are included."--BOOK JACKET. "The authors provide organizing ideas, motivation, and historical background for the study and application of some important special functions. This work can serve as a learning tool and lasting reference for students and researchers in special functions, mathematical physics, differential equations, mathematical computing, number theory, and combinatorics."--Jacket

Orthogonal polynomials and special functions by Richard Askey( Book )

11 editions published between 1974 and 1975 in English and Italian and held by 422 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Originally presented as lectures, the theme of this volume is that one studies orthogonal polynomials and special functions not for their own sake, but to be able to use them to solve problems. The author presents problems suggested by the isometric embedding of projective spaces in other projective spaces, by the desire to construct large classes of univalent functions, by applications to quadrature problems, and theorems on the location of zeros of trigonometric polynomials. There are also applications to combinatorial problems, statistics, and physical problems

Approach your problems from It isn't that they can't see the right end and begin with the solution. the answers. Then one day, It is that they can't see the perhaps you will find the problem. final question. G.K. Chesterton. The Scandal 'The Hermit Clad in Crane of Father Brown 'The Point of Feathers' in R. van Gulik's a Pin'. The Chinese Maze Murders. Growing specialization and diversification have brought a host of monographs and textbooks on increasingly specialized topics. However, the "tree" of knowledge of mathematics and related fields does not grow only by putting forth new branches. It also happens, quite often in fact, that branches which were thought to be completely disparate are suddenly seen to be related. Further, the kind and level of sophistication of mathematics applied in various sciences has changed drastically in recent years: measure theory is used (non-trivially) in regional and theoretical economics; algebraic geometry interacts with physics; the Minkowsky lemma, coding theory and the structure of water meet one another in packing and covering theory; quantum fields, crystal defects and mathematical programming profit from homotopy theory; Lie algebras are relevant to filtering; and prediction and electrical engineering can use Stein spaces. And in addition to this there are such new emerging SUbdisciplines as "completely integrable systems", "chaos, synergetics and large-scale order", which are almost impossible to fit into the existing classification schemes. They draw upon widely different sections of mathematics

This video contains edited talks presented at the Special Session, "Meetings of Mathematicians," held during the 100th meeting of the AMS in Cincinnati in January 1994. Rich with history and sparkling with humor, it features reminiscences by distinguished elders of the mathematical community. Accessible to a general audience and requiring no mathematical background, this lively and touching program will appeal to anyone with a fondness for the history of mathematics

Integral representations for some combinatorial numbers are established and a combinatorial interpretation is found for certain sums involving the Meixner polynomials. Various integrals of products of Laguerre polynomials are interpreted in a combinatorial way by means of MacMahon's Master Theorem
A Generalization of ultraspherical polynomials by Richard Askey( Book )

6 editions published in 1978 in English and held by 7 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Some old polynomials of L.J. Rogers are orthogonal. Their weight function is given. The connection coefficient problem, which Rogers solved by guessing the formula and proving it by induction, is derived in a natural way and some other formulas are obtained. These polynomials generalize zonal spherical harmonics on spheres and include as special cases polynomials that are spherical functions on rank one spaces over reductive p-adic groups. A limiting case contains some Jacobi polynomials studied by Hylleraas that arose in work on the Yukawa potential. (Author)
