Lo que hasta hace pocos anos parecia un capitulo cerrado de la historia de la medicina: las yerbas medicinales, por ejemplo hoy forman parte de la posmodernidad inmediata, y lo que ayer era inerte, inutil, placebo o charlataneria, ahora resulta tangible, mediable y reutilizable porque el paradigma biologico se ha modificado con el conocimiento recientemente adquirido. Por otra parte, el mundo de Occidente o, mejor dicho, " La manera occidental de vivir " ha entrado en una fase diferente de percepcion cultural de su entorno: lo primitivo ha dejado de tener la connotacion de subdesarrollado, y las culturas indigenas resurgen para proporcionar informacion, costumbres, que los pueblos industrializados parecen requerir con gran necesidad. Finalmente la Historia Medicinal de las Cosas que se traen de nuestras Indias Occidentales que sirven en Medicina, tienen su origen a mediados del siglo XVI, producto de una gran tarea de recopilacion del ilustre sevillano Nicolas Monardes. Este medico fue uno de los primeros europeos que reunio material sobre los productos medicinales del Nuevo Mundo, rebasando la idea de los herbarios habituales para ahondar en el origen, caracteristicas y uso de las plantas americanas, apuntando su similitud con productos dela farmacologia europea de aquella epoca(AU)
