This collection of studies is divided into four parts. Part one is concerned with aspects of maternal communication as it relates to regulative and instructional contexts. Part two focuses on aspects of the speech of five year olds, with Hawkins examining choices within the nominal group, Turner and Pickvance examining expressions of uncertainty and tentativeness, and Robinson and Creed describing an experiment to test the effects of a language program designed by D.M. and G. Gahagan. Part three examines aspects of the speech of seven year olds: Hawkins analyzes social class differences in the use of hesitation in speech; Robinson analyzes the answering behavior of mother and children, showing the interrelationship between styles; and Turner compares the speech of five-year-old children with the same children's speech at seven years of age. Hansan and Cook in part four distinguished between code, register, and social dialect and review a range of studies which focus upon the study of social control and socialization within the family. Finally, Halliday explores his approach to the child's acquisition of the functions of language. (Hod)

Children, research, and policy by Basil Bernstein( Book )

16 editions published between 1996 and 2013 in English and Undetermined and held by 252 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

These essays are integrated and motivated by a common and powerful concern to understand the origins and outcomes of fractured relations which mark the experiences of some children in our society. Barbara Tizard, currently Emeritus Professor of Education, University of London, retired from the directorship of the Thomas Coram Research Unit in 1990. This collection of essays celebrates and honours her contribution to research and policy, which focused on the ways in which children were disadvantaged educationally, emotionally and socially. Her research contributed to the reform of institutional care for children, to a revision of teachers' notions of children's competence and to a greater understanding of the complexities of children's identities. Barbara Tizard's engagement in policy related research stemmed from a passionate but highly disciplined concern to provide a sound research basis for the judgements, decisions and practice of agencies as these shape children's lives
Class and pedagogies : visible and invisible by Basil Bernstein( Book )

9 editions published in 1975 in English and held by 199 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This paper defines the "invisible pedagogy," a teaching model used in British infant schools, and discusses its relationship to middle class culture, working class culture, and "visible" pedagogy. The invisible pedagogy is characterized by several features including (1) implicit rather than explicit control over the child by the teacher; (2) reduced emphasis on the transmission and acquisition of specific skills; (3) relatively free activity by the child in exploring and rearranging an environment arranged by the teacher; and (4) use of many diffuse criteria to evaluate the pedagogy. It is suggested that the basic concept of the invisible pedagogy in infant schools is play, which socializes the child while he explores and allows the teacher to evaluate his development. Theories of learning which are consistent with the invisible pedagogy are described in general terms. The differences between visible and invisible pedagogies are described as reflecting an ideological conflict between the old and new middle classes, and the social significance of the invisible pedagogy is said to differ according to the social class of the child. Problems arising in the transition of children from homes to preschools with invisible pedagogy, and from these preschools to secondary schools and universities with visible pedagogy, are discussed. Basil Bernstein was one of the most important figures in British sociology, his ideas having inspired a great deal of empirical research and theoretical speculation throughout the world. The purpose of this collection, however, is not to collect memoirs and celebrations of Bernstein. It contains a collection of work by authors who are concerned with contemporary issues and analyses. Each author represented has to some extent been influenced by Bernstein, and thus uses Bernstein's ideas as a point of departure as well as to develop original analyses and perspectives. All of the chapters in this volume are original and each chapter is intended to make a contribution to the sociology of education and educational thought -- Provided by the publisher
