"Starting with the story of how he once forgot the name of an Italian painter - and how a young acquaintance mangled a quotation from Virgil through fears that his girlfriend might be pregnant - it brings together a treasure trove of muddled memories, inadvertent actions, and verbal tangles. Amusing, moving, and deeply revealing of the repressed, hypocritical Viennese society of his day, Freud's dazzling interpretations provide the perfect introduction to psychoanalytic thinking in action."--BOOK JACKET
The interpretation of dreams by Sigmund Freud ( Book )
56 editions published between 1945 and 2010 in 4 languages and held by 1,406 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Freud considers why we dream and what it means in the larger picture of our psychological lives. Delving into theories of manifest and latent dream content, the special language of dreams, dreams as wish fulfillments, the significance of childhood experiences, and much more, Freud, widely considered the "father of psychoanalysis," thoroughly and thoughtfully examines dream psychology. Encompassing dozens of case histories and detailed analyses of actual dreams, this landmark text presents Freud's legendary work as a tool for comprehending our sleeping experiences
Beyond the pleasure principle by Sigmund Freud ( Book )
50 editions published between 1950 and 2010 in 3 languages and held by 1,359 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Throughout the period when Freud wrote his major works, various translations and editions, differing widely in the accuracy of their texts and the quality of their content, made their appearance. Increasingly, as the body of Freud's work achieved commanding stature, the need arose for a definitive and uniformly authentic English-language edition of all his writings, The Standard Edition of the Complete Psychological Works of Sigmund Freud was undertaken to achieve this goal. The work is under the general editorship of James Strachey, and he himself made new translations of many of the writings, supervising the emendation of others and contributing valuable notes, both bibliographical and explanatory. THe result is to place this edition in a position of unquestioned supremacy over all other existing versions--which are in fact rendered obsolete
Introductory lectures on psychoanalysis by Sigmund Freud ( Book )
41 editions published between 1963 and 2004 in 3 languages and held by 1,305 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
In 1915 at the University of Vienna 60-year-old Sigmund Freud delivered these lectures on psychoanalysis, pointing to the interplay of unconscious and conscious forces within individual psyches. In reasoned progression he outlined core psychoanalytic concepts, such as repression, free association and libido. Of the various English translations of Freud's major works to appear in his lifetime, only one was authorized by Freud himself: The Standard Edition of the Complete Psychological Works of Sigmund Freud under the general editorship of James Strachey. Freud approved the overall editorial plan, specific renderings of key words and phrases, and the addition of valuable notes, from bibliographical and explanatory. Many of the translations were done by Strachey himself; the rest were prepared under his supervision. The result was to place the Standard Edition in a position of unquestioned supremacy over all other existing versions. Newly designed in a uniform format, each new paperback in the Standard Edition opens with a biographical essay on Freud's life and work --along with a note on the individual volume--by Peter Gay, Sterling Professor of History at Yale. --Publisher

Jokes and their relation to the unconscious by Sigmund Freud ( Book )
33 editions published between 1889 and 1991 in 3 languages and held by 933 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Freud argues that the "joke-work" is intimately related to the "dream-work" which he had analyzed in detail in his Interpretation of Dreams, and that jokes (like all forms of humor) attest to the fundamental orderliness of the human mind. While in this book Freud tells some good stories with his customary verve and economy, its point is wholly serious. -- Publisher description
