Philostratus, Imagines; Callistratus, Descriptions by Philostratus( Book )

52 editions published between 1578 and 2015 in 5 languages and held by 1,355 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

It is not known to what extent the descriptions are of real works of art, but they show how artists treated their subjects, and are written with some artistic knowledge and largely in pleasant language. Yet rhetorical skill, though working sincerely on themes in art, dominates over serious art-criticism. The elder Philostratus, impressed by illusion of reality in painting, prefers paintings inspired by literary sources and mythology (and history) and goes beyond what the paintings show. There are illustrations of epic, tragic, and lighter styles in painting, and much special knowledge of interesting things is displayed. The younger Philostratus is like his grandfather but strives less for rhetorical effect and does not bring in unusual knowledge. He has a theory of the painters functions but is impressed not by illusion of reality in general but by representation of persons in particular. Callistratus knew his predecessors work, travelled much, and apparently saw statues which he describes. In each case, avoiding rhetorical devices, he gives a few details and then praises the artist. -- JACKET

"In the Life of Apollonius, the Athenian author Philostratus, a sophist who lived from c.170 to c.247, tells the story of Apollonius of Tyana, a charismatic teacher and miracle worker from the first century CE who belonged to the school of Pythagoras. It is an apologetic work, in which Philostratus tries to show that Philostratus was a man with divine powers, but not a magician. He also pays attention to Apollonius' behavior as a sophist"--Publisher's website

This biography of a first-century C.E. holy man has become one of the most widely discussed literary works of later antiquity. With an engaging style, Philostratus portrays a charismatic teacher and religious reformer from Tyana in Cappadocia (modern central Turkey) who travels across the known world, from the Atlantic to the Ganges. His miracles, which include extraordinary cures and mysterious disappearances, together with his apparent triumph over death, caused pagans to make Apollonius a rival to Jesus of Nazareth. In a new two-volume Loeb Classical Library edition of Philostratus's third-century work, Christopher Jones provides a freshly edited Greek text and a stylish translation with full explanatory notes. Apollonius of Tyana is by far the longest biography that survives from antiquity. Jones in his Introduction asks how far it is history and how far fiction, and discusses its survival from Late Antiquity to modern times
