Quantum theory and measurement by
John Archibald Wheeler(
)
21 editions published between 1983 and 2016 in English and Italian and held by 1,366 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
The fortynine papers collected here illuminate the meaning of quantum theory as it is disclosed in the measurement process. Together with an introduction and a supplemental annotated bibliography, they discuss issues that make quantum theory, overarching principle of twentiethcentury physics, appear to many to prefigure a new revolution in science. Originally published in 1983. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest printondemand technology to again make available previously outofprint books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. These paperback editions preserve the original texts of these important books while presenting them in durable paperback editions. The goal of the Princeton Legacy Library is to vastly increase access to the rich scholarly heritage found in the thousands of books published by Princeton University Press since its founding in 1905

The manyworlds interpretation of quantum mechanics : a fundamental exposition by
Hugh Everett(
)
6 editions published in 1973 in English and held by 779 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
A novel interpretation of quantum mechanics, first proposed in brief form by Hugh Everett in 1957, forms the nucleus around which this book has developed. In his interpretation, Dr. Everett denies the existence of a separate classical realm and asserts the propriety of considering a state vector for the whole universe. Because this state vector never collapses, reality as a whole is rigorously deterministic. This reality, which is described jointly by the dynamical variables and the state vector, is not the reality customarily perceived; rather, it is a reality composed of many worlds. By virtue of the temporal development of the dynamical variables, the state vector decomposes naturally into orthogonal vectors, reflecting a continual splitting of the universe into a multitude of mutually unobservable but equally real worlds, in each of which every good measurement has yielded a definite result, and in most of which the familiar statistical quantum laws hold. The volume contains Dr. Everett's short paper from 1957, "'Relative State' Formulation of Quantum Mechanics," and a far longer exposition of his interpretation, entitled "The Theory of the Universal Wave Function," never before published. In addition, other papers by Wheeler, DeWitt, Graham, and Cooper and Van Vechten provide further discussion of the same theme. Together, they constitute virtually the entire world output of scholarly commentary on the Everett interpretation. Originally published in 1973. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest printondemand technology to again make available previously outofprint books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. Gravitation and inertia by
Ignazio Ciufolini(
Book
)
13 editions published in 1995 in English and held by 739 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Einstein's standard and battletested geometric theory of gravity spacetime tells mass how to move and mass tells spacetime how to curve is expounded in this book by Ignazio Ciufolini and John Wheeler. They give special attention to the theory's observational checks and to two of its consequences: the predicted existence of gravitomagnetism and the origin of inertia (local inertial frames) in Einstein's general relativity inertia here arises from mass there

At home in the universe by
John Archibald Wheeler(
Book
)
26 editions published between 1992 and 1996 in English and held by 718 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Colleague and confidant of Einstein and Bohr, pioneer of nuclear fission theory, and staunch champion of the theory of black holes John Archibald Wheeler is one of the most original and profound thinkers of modern science. In 1939 he published, with Niels Bohr, the first paper to describe nuclear fission successfully in terms of quantum physics, a groundbreaking study that led to his involvement in the Los Alamos atom bomb project and his subsequent work on the hydrogen bomb. Wheeler has made significant contributions to atomic and nuclear physics, elementaryparticle physics, relativity theory, cosmology, and astrophysics. Yet, in the final analysis, it is his simple delight and wonder in "the machinery of existence" that illuminates this collection. At Home in the Universe presents a feast of engaging essays formed of reminiscence, science, and conjecture

Black holes, gravitational waves, and cosmology : an introduction to current research by
Martin J Rees(
Book
)
32 editions published between 1974 and 2009 in English and held by 544 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
This volume first appeared in the English and Russian editions in 1974 as an introduction for new graduate students, to the rapidly developing field of relativistic astrophysics and cosmology. Some of the classic concepts introduced in the first edition included: * the lines of force of electric and magnetic fields near a black hole * the ergosphere and effective potential techniques for a rotating black hole * the details of rotational energy extraction from a black hole * the basic estimates for the crosssections of gravitational wave detectors * and for the energy sources of gravitational waves * the scenario for gravitational collapse In cosmology, the foundations of the hot big bang model, the cosmic background radiation and cosmological nucleosynthesis were reviewed and the volume concluded with a lecture entitled Beyond the End of Time by J.A. Wheeler. Since 1974, enormous progress has occurred in some of these areas and the corresponding treatments are complex. This new edition provides a useful source of reference and presents the initial treatments of these topics and the ideas that motivated them thus providing a more complete picture of the development of this field for the reader. In order to mark the progress made in the intervening years, the authors have compiled a introduction to the new edition and an Appendix which comprises classic reprints which are related to the problems discussed in the original edition

The forty papers collected here honor one of the great scientists of our timeJohn Archibald Wheeler. In this volume are gathered the six issues of the journal Foundations of Physics (February through July 1986) that celebrate his seventyfifth birthday. Enlivened by Professor Wheeler's celebrated drawings, the book captures and illuminates his many contributions to physics, including his discovery of the scattering matrix and his elucidation, with Niels Bohr, of the mechanism of nuclear fission, his many contributions to Einstein's theory of gravity (for instance, the black hole), his deep insights into quantum theory and measurement (the elementary quantum phenomenon), and his efforts to explain the origins of the quantum postulate and quantum gravity (the meaning circuit and the WheelerDeWitt Equation). The majority of the papers reflect and build on Professor Wheeler's revolutionary ideas. Many scientists are convinced that his insights into the foundation of modernday physics will induce a profound change in our perception of the universe. This book will appeal to scientists and philosophers who wish to look at one man's rendering of the "big picture" through the eyes of his colleagues. The work is prefaced by a compilation of "es from Professor Wheeler, edited by Kip S. Thorne and Wojciech Zurek. The contributors to Between Quantum and Cosmos are M. Alexander, A. Anderson, H.H. Barschall, J.D. Bekenstein, C.H. Bennett, P.G. Bergmann, V.B. Braginsky, D.R. Brill, L. Brown, I. Ciufolini, L. Cohen, M. Demianski, D. Deutsch, B. DeWitt, C. DeWittMorette, R.H.
