Patterns of evolution as illustrated by the fossil record by A Hallam( Book )

23 editions published between 1977 and 1978 in English and Dutch and held by 619 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This volume represents an assessment by a number of distinguished palaeontologists of the evolutionary patterns that can be discerned from the fossil record, interpreted in the light of evolutionary theory and our present knowledge of the changing environments of our planet. After an opening historical essay, a general account of metazoan evolution and a discussion of stochastic models, many of the most important invertebrate and vertebrate groups are dealt with successively by specialists. There is no attempt at comprehensiveness. Not only would this have given rise to a book of inordinate length, but specialists with the appropriate interests and experience would have been hard to find for every fossil group. In particular, only one chapter is devoted to plants, essentially because plant fossils have never in the past contributed much to our knowledge of evolution. An exception has been made, however, in the case of the angiosperms, because modern palynological work has begun to throw significant new light on the origin and early evolution of this important and highly interesting group
Cyclic sedimentation by P. McL. D Duff( Book )

Mass extinctions and their aftermath by A Hallam( Book )

17 editions published between 1997 and 2002 in English and held by 585 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Why do mass extinctions occur? The demise of the dinosaurs has been discussed exhaustively, but has never been out into the context of other extinction events. This is the first systematic review of the mass extinctions of all organisms, plant and animal, terrestrial and marine, that have occurred in the history of life. This includes the major crisis 250 million years ago which nearly wiped out all life on Earth. By examining current paleontological, geological, and sedimentological evidence of environmental changes, the cases for explanations based on climate change, marine regressions, asteroid or comet impact, anoxia, and volcanic eruptions are all critically evaluated
Jurassic environments by A Hallam( Book )

11 editions published between 1975 and 2010 in English and Russian and held by 537 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Studies of the Jurassic period are greatly helped by the high degree of stratigraphic control provided by the ubiquitous ammonites. Although this work, originally publisjed in 1975, is not a study of stratigraphy as such, a short chapter on this topic is included to provide a framework for environmental interpretation. The main goal of this book is to review in detail the advances which existed at the time in the interpretation of Jurassic facies in the classical European and American deposits and to then apply this knowledge to illuminate more general topics such as the fluctuation in land/sea distribution and the nature of the Jurassic climate and biogeography. There is also an account of plate tectonics and igneous activity during the period. A comprehensive bibliography is provided, which includes the important stratigraphic literature published from 1956 to 1975"--
