Kenneth White, essayiste, poète et philosophe, a largement mérité le prix Médicis étranger 1983, même si plusieurs de ses livres publiés antérieurement sont meilleurs que ##La route bleue## (cf. en particulier ##Lettres de Gourgounel##). Il s'agit du récit d'un voyage de Montréal au Labrador, au cours duquel l'auteur a confronté une lecture et un rêve d'enfance à la réalité, d'une quête initiatique sous le double signe du taoïsme et de la nordicité (on retrouve ici l'inspiration des poèmes de ##Terre de diamant##, A. Eibel, 1977). En nomade intellectuel, bon vivant, adepte des "méditations géomentales", l'auteur - le plus français des Ecossais (?) - a presque réussi à sortir de l'histoire pour entrer dans la géographie". La chose eût été plus simple si White n'avait pas emporté avec lui une bonne partie de sa bibliothèque (d'où l'abondance excessive des citations). Un bon livre quand même. [SDM]
