The essential Comte; selected from Cours de philosophie positive by Auguste Comte( Book )

13 editions published between 1974 and 2015 in English and held by 575 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Auguste Comte proclaimed himself the founder of sociology and, on the whole, this claim is accepted. His most important work is the six-volume Cours de Philosophie Positive of which this present book is a selective abridgement. Comte, as this selection shows, was a methodological visionary. He was an eminently successful terminological innovator and to him we owe not only 'sociology' and 'positivism' but also 'biology' and 'altruism'. Professor Andreski, in his lucid introduction, assesses Comte's place under six headings, as
Max Weber on capitalism, bureaucracy, and religion : a selection of texts by Max Weber( Book )

20 editions published between 1983 and 2009 in English and held by 542 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Introduces the selections, which are centred on Max Weber's principal interest, the relationship between capitalism, religion and bureaucracy. This book seeks to correct the misinterpretations of Weber's work which have stressed his classification, rather than his attempts to explain social phenomena on the basis of universal historical trends
Herbert Spencer: structure, function and evolution by Herbert Spencer( Book )

21 editions published between 1971 and 1972 in English and held by 502 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Herbert Spencer's sociology and his theory of social evolution are thought by many to be dead. This--as Talcott Parsons pointed out--is because they do not read him. Spencer is essentially a modern thinker, and his work demonstrates the absurdity of many distinctions between supposed 'schools' in contemporary sociology. He was one of the earliest exponents of a 'structural-functional' analysis of society, and used this specifically to provide a systematic theory of social change showing that any supposed conflict between 'functional' analysis and an account of social change is inaccurate. His contribution was considerable not only in helping to clarify the conceptual basis of sociology, but also in undertaking broad studies in comparative sociology within a necessary classification of types of society. His resulting account of particular social institutions--the family, religion, property, the professions, etc., and especially of their nature in modern industrial society--shows remarkable insight and provides a fund of knowledge which is still worthwhile."--Publisher description

22 editions published between 1984 and 2013 in 3 languages and held by 471 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Max Weber (1864-1920) is generally recognised as one of the founding fathers of modern sociology. His ideas continue to be discussed by sociologists and historians and much homage is paid to his contribution to knowledge. However, such is the awe which the breadth of his knowledge inspires that most general books about Weber contain summaries rather than criticism. This book is the first attempt to evaluate Weber's entire work in the light of historical knowledge available today and of contemporary analytic philosophy. Professor Andreski shows where Weber's true greatness lies, which of Web

Professor Andreski's aim has been to use Weber's own works to explain crucial turns in the evolution of societies and cultures, while eliminating the difficulties of language and frequent mistrans
