The Robbers Cave experiment : intergroup conflict and cooperation by Muzafer Sherif( )

10 editions published between 1988 and 2010 in English and held by 1,616 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"In this famous experiment, one of the earliest in inter-group relationships, two dozen twelve-year-old boys in summer camp were formed into two groups, the Rattlers and the Eagles, and induced first to become militantly ethnocentric, then intensely cooperative. Friction and stereotyping were stimulated by a tug-of-war, by frustrations perceived to be caused by the “out” group, and by separation from the others. Harmony was stimulated by close contact between previously hostile groups and by the introduction of goals that neither group could meet alone. The experiment demonstrated that conflict and enmity between groups can be transformed into cooperation and vice versa and that circumstances, goals, and external manipulation can alter behavior. Some have seen the findings of the experiment as having implications for reduction of hostility among racial and ethnic groups and among nations, while recognizing the difficulty of control of larger groups."--Publisher's description

Social interaction process and products; selected essays by Muzafer Sherif( Book )

28 editions published between 1967 and 2017 in English and Italian and held by 930 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Reflecting the many contributions of Muzafer Sherif to social psychology during the past thirty years, this volume presents selections from among Sherif's most widely known essays and provides a systematic overview of his evolving interests, concepts, methods and research findings. Twenty-five essays are divided into five sections according to content; the theoretical and methodological problems at the heart of Sherif's work; the experimental model for interaction process and products; problems of self and reference groups; concepts, attitudes and ego-involvements; and contributions to problems of in-group and intergroup relations through experimental and field research. Though the selections range over a broad spectrum each is characterized by the precise and incisive work techniques Sherif devised as well as by its intrinsic relevance to significant issues. Sherif writes to clarify theory, to define conceptual tools, and to use tools and theory to demonstrate the substantive results of his researches. Each research finding is added to its predecessors as the author advances to his goal of a social psychology that is consistent as it moves from the most basic psychological processes to the complexities of individual involvement in collective activity"--Provided by publisher
Problems of youth: transition to adulthood in a changing world by Muzafer Sherif( Book )

25 editions published between 1965 and 2017 in English and Undetermined and held by 918 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This book describes and analyzes, from an interdisciplinary point of view, those problems of youth that are currently objects of remedial action on both community and national levels. It explores the many causes of adolescent happiness and discontent, behavior and misbehavior, aspirations and aversions in the rapidly changing patterns of contemporary class, institutional, and cultural settings. It provides practical information for all professionals concerned with adolescent problems and affords small comfort to any who hopes for quick results.Problems of Youth first considers problems traditionally considered in youth research, discussing adolescent attitudes and goals within a broadly applicable theory of adolescent development. The second part concentrates on youth problems in terms of their dynamics in social and cultural settings undergoing change at different rates. The third part presents studies of youth in trouble, offering guidelines for new theoretical and empirical approaches and underscoring the need, to study individual youth problems within their socio-cultural and class frameworks. The final part attempts through research and measurement the major sources of influences affecting youth.Reflecting the position that there is a constant danger of viewing adolescence exclusively through the eyes of one's own specialty, the contributors to this volume take a cross-disciplinary approach to the subject, drawing on resources of other fields to expand the perspective of their particular area of specialization. In doing so, they offer all students of sociology, social psychology, and related disciplines a new, unified approach to the timely paradox of youth in transition with itself and with a world that is itself in transition."--Provided by publisher
The psychology of ego-involvements, social attitudes & identifications by Muzafer Sherif( Book )

40 editions published between 1947 and 1966 in English and held by 890 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"In this book on the psychology of ego-involvements we are attacking a problem which it seems crucial to solve if we are ever to acquire a scientifically defensible account of man's relationship to the world around him with all its natural laws, its technological developments, and its social products. Here we are only able to sketch in bold relief what appears to be the psychology of ego-involvements. Much more must be added later to complete the account. But it seems to us that the broad outline presented here will accommodate this further work without any major alterations. Evidence from a wide variety of sources, including studies from the experimental laboratory, investigations of everyday life behavior, public-opinion surveys, observational studies of children and adolescents, sociological data, and field material of anthropologists and ethnologists, has almost fallen into place of its own accord. Although we have cited rather extensive references, our job has been more one of selection than accumulation of data: in nearly every chapter, we have had to satisfy ourselves with the inclusion of only a few of the many reports, observations, or experiments that might have been mentioned. Those who are familiar with the various areas we have touched on will know the vast literature it is possible to tap"--Pref. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2005 APA, all rights reserved)
Interdisciplinary relationships in the social sciences. by Muzafer Sherif( Book )

24 editions published between 1969 and 2017 in 3 languages and held by 822 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Interdisciplinary collaboration in the social sciences is obviously essential to scientific progress, but discontent and practical difficulties hinder collaboration in research and training. Many of the problems arise from the failure in the separate disciplines to understand the basis on which collaboration is necessary and possible. In an effort to shed light on the situation, these original essays by eminent scholars - economists, geographers, psychologists, political scientists, sociologists, anthropologists, and others - demonstrate effective means of achieving interdisciplinary coordination in studying human behavior and delineating promising areas - for cooperative research. The book provides a sophisticated guide to the nature of knowledge in social science as applied to its core disciplines. Since the social sciences separately are studying and theorizing about many of the same kinds of human behavior, the contributors propose that scholars can avoid possible duplication of effort and increase the validity of their formulations by consulting the related findings and methodology from other disciplines before embarking on a research problem. The contributors maintain that this interchange, by broadening the total knowledge of each discipline, represents the best approach toward fulfilling the goals of social scientific inquiry. The individual chapters give valuable insight into the theoretical overlaps among the disciplines and outline specific research areas - such as group interaction, political attitudes, and intergroup relations - that require interdisciplinary cooperation to produce valid formulations. A major step toward creating a dialogue among disciplines, the book will enable every social scientist to understand more clearly the current state and future direction of interdisciplinary relationships and their indispensable future in social scientific thought

22 editions published between 1965 and 1982 in English and held by 753 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In this book the social judgment-involvement approach to the study of attitude and attitude change are presented. The book outlines a systematic framework substantiated by a series of new research findings, many of them published previously. The approach has shaped itself gradually during the last thirty years, as authors have proceeded cautiously and, at times, slowly. At every step, the authors took stock of material from the research of others as well as theirs
