"Simpson's new play concerns the preoccupations of the National Help You Out Committee with the fate of a man drowning in the Mediterranean. The action of the play covers 27 1/2 months during which Albert Whitbrace's lifebelt becomes increasingly waterlogged and the Bay of Naples is put firmly on the tourist map. His death removes an object of concern from the public eye - though it does give people the chance of collecting for his widow. -- Book cover

N.F. Simpson led the twentieth-century British absurdist movement. 'Gladly Otherwise' is a short early sketch, first performed as part of the revue 'One to Another' at the Lyric Theatre, Hammersmith in 1959. It takes place in a suburban home occupied by a couple; while the husband hides in a corner, his wife is assailed by an officious-looking man, complete with rolled umbrella and bowler hat. It is unclear as to exactly who this suggestive handle fetishist might be, but he happily takes over the Brandywines' home, inspecting their gadgets while barely suppressing his accusatory tone throughout

" ... The play is about two neighbouring households in Naples and the effect on them of what they had lived through for the previous twenty years or so. There had been Fascist dictatorship, and war, and military occupation by both German 'allies' and British and American 'liberators' and the poverty which was and is a permanent feature of life in Naples, had become near-starvation"--Intro. p. I shall shortly be eighty-eight. High time to be giving serious thought to the direction my life should be taking. In an upper-crust retirement home, Geoffrey Wythenshaw sits down to write his memoir. But he faces constant interruption from his fellow residents, attending staff and an invasion of downmarket pensioners from the Cairngorms. Some of them seek his wisdom, others only distraction. Examining with heart and humour what it means to grow old, N.F. Simpson's 'If So, Then Yes' premiered at the Jermyn Street Theatre, London, in September 2010, in a production by Presence Theatre
