A theology of liberation : history, politics, and salvation by Gustavo Gutiérrez( Book )

63 editions published between 1973 and 2014 in English and Korean and held by 2,199 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This is the credo and seminal text of the movement which was later characterized as liberation theology. The book burst upon the scene in the early seventies, and was swiftly acknowledged as a pioneering and prophetic approach to theology which famously made an option for the poor, placing the exploited, the alienated, and the economically wretched at the centre of a programme where "the oppressed and maimed and blind and lame" were prioritized at the expense of those who either maintained the status quo or who abused the structures of power for their own ends. This powerful, compassionate and radical book attracted criticism for daring to mix politics and religion in so explicit a manner, but was also welcomed by those who had the capacity to see that its agenda was nothing more nor less than to give "good news to the poor", and redeem God's people from bondage

Las Casas : in search of the poor of Jesus Christ by Gustavo Gutiérrez( Book )

10 editions published between 1993 and 2003 in English and Spanish and held by 581 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

What emerges is both a prophet of unquestioned courage and a theologian of remarkable depth, whose vision continues to set in relief the challenge of the gospel in a world of injustice. Not only did Las Casas point the way to such contemporary themes as the church's "preferential option for the poor" and the denunciation of "social sin," but he anticipated by centuries the principles of religious freedom, the rights of conscience, and the salvation of non-Christians, articulated at Vatican II. Through the poor of his time, Las Casas was moved to rediscover the radical challenge of the gospel. Gutierrez writes from a similar location and with a similar pathos. Far from a dry exercise in historical retrieval, Las Casas represents the author's most recent effort to articulate the Gospel of Jesus Christ in our own world and time, now as then marked by oppression as well as the struggle for liberation

4 editions published in 1996 in English and held by 541 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In this first anthology of Gutierrez's massively influential work, James Nickoloff draws from Gutierrez's many published books and translates some pieces for the first time. Arranged both thematically and chronologically, the Selected Texts highlight not only the revolutionary import of Gutierrez's theology but also his deep and searching spirituality, his bold view of the church, and his personal challenge to the reader to engage the world's injustices directly. Nickoloff's expert Introduction explains the development of Gutierrez's ideas and sheds new light on the Latin American, especially Peruvian, context of his thought

The preferential option for the poor beyond theology by Daniel G Groody( Book )

6 editions published between 2013 and 2014 in English and held by 145 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Since the 1973 publication of Gustavo Gutiérrez's groundbreaking work A Theology of Liberation, liberation theology's central premise of the preferential option for the poor has become one of the most important yet controversial theological themes of the twentieth century. As the situation for many of the world's poor worsens, it becomes ever more important to ensure that the option for the poor remains not only a vibrant theological concept but also a practical framework for living out the gift and challenge of Christian faith. The Preferential Option for the Poor beyond Theology draws on a diverse group of contributors to explore how disciplines as varied as law, economics, politics, the environment, science, liberal arts, film, and education can help us understand putting a commitment to the option for the poor into practice. The central focus of the book revolves around the question: How can one live a Christian life in a world of destitution? The contributors address the theological concept of the option for the poor as well as the ways it can shape our social, economic, political, educational, and environmental approaches to poverty. Their creative examples serve as an inspiration to all those who are seeking to put their talents at the service of human need and the building of a more just and humane world

Reflects intersection between the lives, commitments, and strategies of two highly respected figures Dr. Paul Farmer and Fr. Gustavo Gutierrez joined in their option for the poor, their defense of life, and their commitment to liberation. Farmer has credited liberation theology as the inspiration for his effort to do social justice medicine, while Gutierrez has recognized Farmer's work as particularly compelling example of the option for the poor, and the impact that theology can have outside the church. Draws on their respective writings, major addresses by both at Notre Dame, and a transcript of a dialogue between them. - Amazon.com
