Due to his reckless driving, a brilliant plastic surgeon, Dr. Genessier is responsible for disfiguring his beautiful daughter. Guilt-ridden, he resolves to fashion a new face for his daughter by grafting skin tissue from unsuspecting female patients with similar molecular structures. His devoted assistant, Louise, searches Paris for girls who resemble Christiane and lures them back to Genessier's sanitorium where they are held captive. After several failed attempts, the doctor temporarily restores Christiane's face. Unfortunately, the epidermis deteriorates at an alarming rate. Christiane seeks revenge by murdering Louise and unleashing the dogs her father had intended for experimentation. The mad canines tear off Genessier's face, while Christiane, still faceless, wanders into the night

In this crime melodrama, Franju pays homage to early French cinema, particularly the work of pioneer director Louis Feuillade. Indeed, the film takes its title from Feuillade's 1916 serial of the same name. Favraux, a wicked banker, is warned by super detective Judex that unless he reforms he will be punished. Judex kidnaps Favraux at a masked ball and while disguised as the banker's elderly secretary, informs the banker's daughter Jacqueline about her father's immoral dealings. She reacts promptly by renouncing her inheritance. Diana Monti is a governess-cum-mistress of disguise in love with Favraux but having an affair with Morales. Her plan to cheat Jacqueline out of her inheritance is foiled. Monti kills her lover and herself. Favraux, too, commits suicide leaving Judex and Jacqueline to marry. Franju's film is noteworthy for its stark black and white cinematography and for its use of silent film conventions like irises and intertitles. The casting of a real magician in the title role complements the film's surreal mood. (Circulates)

In order to get rid of his troublesome son François, Maître Gérane manages to have him committed to a mental hospital owned by Dr. Varmont, a supporter of traditional treatments, in constant conflict with Dr. Emery, whose therapy takes the psychology of patients into account. François soon makes friends with Heurtevent, a sweet epileptic, and both decide to escape from the place. Their attempt is a failure and Heurtevent, unable to get over what he considers a return to hell, commits suicide. But rebellious François tries again and this time around he is successful. He finds shelter at his friend Stephanie's home
