Books are for use : final report of the subject access project to the Council on Library Resources by Subject Access Project( Book )

6 editions published in 1978 in English and held by 107 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Findings are reported for a project designed to improve subject access to books by augmenting marc records with subject descriptions. A books data base, consisting of humanities and social science monographs, was created and made available for online searching. The availability of suitable information in books to produce augmented subject descriptions, costs associated with creating the data base, and benefits derived from searching the data base were explored. Findings include: (1) suitable information to select subject descriptions was available in 90 percent of the books selected for the study; (2) cost of selection and input of subject descriptions was about $5.00 per title with an average computer storage cost of $.30 per record/month; and (3) the average cost of a search was about $14.00 for 20 minutes. A controlled test of 90 searches comparing online searching of marc and books records showed more relevant items were retrieved using the books data base. This greater precision together with lower costs for online searching than marc searching and the ability to answer some queries not possible using catalog information were seen as the major benefits to be derived from searching books. Sample records, books user's manual, and searches conducted for the controlled tests are included in the appendices. (Jpf)

ONTAP : online training and practice manual for ERIC data base searchers by Karen Markey( Book )

11 editions published between 1978 and 1981 in English and held by 80 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This self-improvement manual developed for experienced online searchers presents and discusses several alternative search strategies and their appropriate use to achieve the desired outcome. The manual is divided into two parts: (1) an eight step model of the total search process emphasizing how the decision of the information professional affects retrieval results and search objectives at each step of the search process; and (2) introduction to DIALOG's ontap file and self-improvement exercises with search formulations and explanations selected from the questions stored in the ontap file. Each exercise falls within the scope of interest of one of the 16 eric Clearinghouses. The ontap file is a subset of the eric data base consisting of rie and cije citations for the 1975 eric file and 29 simple, moderate, or difficult search questions with answer sets. It was developed to allow searchers to evaluate their output by computing recall and precision scores of their results with the results of a "perfect search" or answer set. The appendices include 13 search save formulations of common search facets for "population level" and "tools" which can be accessed and exchanged between dialog workspaces by using the procedures that are outlined, and a comprehensive guide to DIALOG's eric data bases. Guidelines for the organization of training courses, workshops, and seminars in scientific and technical information and documentation by Pauline A Cochrane( Book )

16 editions published in 1975 in English and Spanish and held by 58 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Guidelines designed to be used in planning non-degree courses in information science and services are described. Courses referred to would contribute to improvement of the role and place of information professionals, information work, and information science in servicing personnel in scientific and technical fields, particularly in developing countries. The needs and interests of different audiences will determine important choices referred to in the guidelines. Checklists to verify the completeness of the plan and to suggest means for evaluating the experience are included. Sections cover planning, organizing, implementing, and evaluating the course. Sample course announcements, application forms, activities and time tables, participant evaluation report, budget/financial report, and checklists are appended. (Author/KP)

File organization and search strategy using the Universal Decimal Classification in mechanized reference retrieval systems by Robert R Freeman( Book )

7 editions published in 1967 in English and held by 36 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Starting from a model of contemporary mechanized retrieval systems and the characteristics of indexing languages used therein, the authors develop a rational basis for use of the universal decimal classification (udc) in this context. Practical design considerations for the use of udc in a mechanized retrieval system are discussed. Examples are reported of the use of udc as the indexing language with the combined file search system, an existing retrieval system for the ibm 1401, used by several large information centers in the united states. Finally, the authors discuss how udc might be used as a query language in a typical retrieval system of the near future in which the user interacts directly with the computer-stored document reference file. The authors conclude that it is technically feasible to use udc in mechanized retrieval systems and that, under certain conditions, it may be desirable. Some of these conditions are the existence of large files already indexed by udc, staff already trained for its use, and extensive international use or exchange of materials of the system. This paper was presented at the fic/ifip conference on mechanized information storage, retrieval, and dissemination (rome, june 15, 1967). this document is available as pb-176-152 from the clearinghouse for federal scientific and technical information, springfield, virginia 22151, $3.00 for hard copy, $0.65 for microfiche, 37 pages.
