The Norton history of the mathematical sciences : the rainbow of mathematics
by I GrattanGuinness

)
6 editions published between 1997 and 1998 in English and held by 1,115 WorldCat member libraries worldwide Beginning with the Babylonian and Egyptian mathematicians of antiquity, The Norton History of the Mathematical Sciences charts the growth of mathematics, through its refinement by ancient Greeks and medieval Arabs, to its systematic development by Europeans from the Middle Ages to the early twentieth century. The traditions of the Far East are also examined. The book describes the evolution of all the major aspects of the discipline: arithmetic and geometry; trigonometry and algebra; the interplay between mathematics, physics, and mathematical astronomy; and "new" branches such as probability, statistics, and mathematical economics
The search for mathematical roots, 18701940 logics, set theories and the foundations of mathematics from Cantor through Russell to Gödel

)
11 editions published between 2000 and 2001 in English and held by 992 WorldCat member libraries worldwide While many books have been written about Bertrand Russell's philosophy and some on his logic, I. GrattanGuinness has written the first comprehensive history of the mathematical background, content, and impact of the mathematical logic and philosophy of mathematics that Russell developed with A.N. Whitehead in their Principia mathematica (19101913). This definitive history of a critical period in mathematics includes detailed accounts of the two principal influences upon Russell around 1900: the set theory of Cantor and the mathematical logic of Peano and his followers. PierreSimon Laplace, 17491827 : a life in exact science
by Charles Coulston Gillispie
(
Book
)
12 editions published between 1997 and 2000 in English and held by 528 WorldCat member libraries worldwide PierreSimon Laplace was among the most influential scientists in history. Often referred to as the lawgiver of French science, he is known for his technical contributions to exact science, for the philosophical point of view he developed in the presentation of his work, and for the leading part he took in forming the modern discipline of mathematical physics. His two most famous treatises were the fivevolume Traite de mecanique celeste (17991825) and Theorie analytique des probabilites (1812). In the former, he demonstrated mathematically the stability of the solar system in accordance with the universal Newtonian law of gravity. In the latter, he developed probability from a set of miscellaneous problems concerning games, averages, mortality, and insurance risks. These estimates of error and statistical inferences could be applied to social, medical, and legal matters, as well as to the physical sciences. This book traces the development of Laplace's research program and of his participation in the Academy of Science during the last decades of the Old Regime into the early years of the French Revolution
Landmark writings in Western mathematics 16401940
by I GrattanGuinness
(
Book
)
12 editions published between 2005 and 2008 in English and held by 511 WorldCat member libraries worldwide This book contains around 80 articles on major writings in mathematics published between 1640 and 1940. All aspects of mathematics are covered: pure and applied, probability and statistics, foundations and philosophy. Sometimes two writings from the same period and the same subject are taken together. The biography of the author(s) is recorded, and the circumstances of the preparation of the writing are given. When the writing is of some lengths an analytical table of its contents is supplied. The contents of the writing is reviewed, and its impact described, at least for the immediate decades. Each article ends with a bibliography of primary and secondary items. First book of its kind Covers the period 16401940 of massive development in mathematics Describes many of the main writings of mathematics Articles written by specialists in their field

George Boole : selected manuscripts on logic and its philosophy
by George Boole
(
Book
)
11 editions published in 1997 in English and held by 188 WorldCat member libraries worldwide George Boole (18151864) is well known to mathematicians for his research and textbooks on the calculus, but his name has spread worldwide for his innovations in symbolic logic and the development and applications made since his day. The utility of "Boolean algebra" in computing has greatly increased curiosity in the nature and extent of his achievements. His work is most accessible in his two books on logic, "A mathematical analysis of logic" (1947) and "An investigation of the laws of thought" (1954). But at various times he wrote manuscript essays, especially after the publication of the second book; several were intended for a nontechnical work, "The Philosophy of logic", which he was not able to complete. This volume contains an edited selection which not only relates them to Boole's publications and the historical context of his time, but also describes their strange history of family, followers and scholars have treid to confect an edition. The book will appeal to logicians, mathematicians and philosophers, and those interested in the histories of the corresponding subjects; and also students of the early Victorian Britain in which they were written
