Lucia di Lammermoor by Gaetano Donizetti( )

300 editions published between 1950 and 2014 in 6 languages and held by 3,414 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This is Maria Callas's only broadcast from the stage of the Met. Hearing "La Divina" in an actual performance is a unique thrill, and Lucia is a huge part of the palpable Callas mystique. Donizetti's bloody tale of the Scottish lass torn from her true love and forced into an arranged marriage, only to go mad and murder her bridegroom on their wedding night, was the perfect vehicle for Callas's wizardry. Her haunting voice simply becomes Lucia's--every facet of emotion so pronounced that we cannot escape her spell

Pollione, a Roman Proconsul, has two children by Norma, a Druid priestess, in the course of a long relationship. Norma isn't as young and beautiful as once she was. A temple virgin, Adalgisa, is young and beautiful. Pollione must have her. He has importuned the young virgin to run away with him to Rome, and she has finally agreed. When Norma learns of Pollione's faithlessness, she threatens to kill the two children. Before she can do this, the Druid temple priests apprehend Pollione as he attempts to abscond with their sacred virgin, Adalgisa. The priests build a pyre to burn Pollione to death. Norma relents. Instead of killing the children, she blames herself for her misery and climbs onto the pyre to die with Pollione

When this production opened, it had been more than half a century since Met audiences had last heard Bellini's gem of an opera. It was well worth the wait. "The best cast in the world," was how one critic described the legendary performers the Met brought together. The pair sent audiences into a frenzy with their sumptuous, dazzling singing. Joan Sutherland, dubbed "La Stupenda" by her fans and the press, is the hapless heroine Elvira who loses her heart--and her sanity--over Luciano Pavarotti, the Cavalier hero torn between love and duty

Callas at Juilliard : the master classes by Maria Callas( Book )

"John Ardoin's transcription, returned to print in this volume, captures the insights of a supremely self-aware artist of impeccable musicianship. In detailed commentaries on seventy-five arias, she talks and sings her way through famous passages of Norma, Violetta, Mimi, and other heroines, not as the imperious diva of her reputation but as a thoughtful artist passing on a great tradition. The intensity that she brought to her roles derived from the clear artistic insight she demonstrates here. With hundreds of music examples, Callas at Juilliard is a truly invaluable resource for every young singer and serious opera lover, and for all those who must have Callas in her own words."--Jacket
