The gospel of wealth, and other timely essays by Andrew Carnegie( Book )

87 editions published between 1889 and 2015 in 3 languages and held by 1,684 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Several essays by businessman and philanthropist Andrew Carnegie are collected in this volume. The title essay lays out Carnegie's belief that the self-made rich have philanthropic responsibilities. Carnegie believed that the large sums of money amassed by many Gilded Age tycoons could be dangerous if they were passed on to those unprepared for them. Instead, Carnegie suggested that the money be put to good use, particularly in ways that might enable others to better themselves. Carnegie put his philosophy into practice by funding the construction of thousands of so-called "Carnegie libraries" around the world

Andrew Carnegie by Andrew Carnegie( Book )

Born of modest origins in Scotland in 1835, Andrew Carnegie is best known as the founder of Carnegie Steel ... Carnegie, the son of an impoverished linen weaver, moved to Pittsburgh at the age of thirteen. The embodiment of the American dream, he pulled himself up from bobbin boy in a cotton factory to become the richest man in the world. He spent the rest of his life giving away the fortune he had accumulated and crusading for international peace. For all that he accomplished and came to represent to the American public - a wildly successful businessman and capitalist, a self-educated writer, peace activist, philanthropist, man of letters, lover of culture, and unabashed enthusiast for American democracy and capitalism - Carnegie has remained, to this day, an enigma.-http://www.booksinprint.com
The "gospel of wealth" essays and other writings by Andrew Carnegie( Book )

7 editions published in 2006 in English and held by 222 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Andrew Carnegie was a critical agent in the triumph of industrial capitalism in the decades surrounding the turn of the twentieth century and by 1901 was arguably the richest man in the world. Differing from his contemporary Gilded Age industrial barons not in the means of accumulating his millions but in the ends to which he put them, Carnegie vowed to give back to the community all he earned. The "Gospel of Wealth" Essays and Other Writings, assembled here for the first time, demonstrate Andrew Carnegie's thoughts on wealth, poverty, the public good, and capitalism."--Jacket
