The analogy of religion, natural and revealed, to the constitution and course of nature by Joseph Butler( )

"It is come, I know not how, to be taken for granted, by many persons, that Christianity is not so much as a Subject of Inquiry; but that it is, now at length, discovered to be fictitious. And accordingly they treat it, as if, in the present age, this were an agreed point, among all people of discernment; and nothing remained, but to set it up as a principal subject of mirth and ridicule, as it were by way of reprisals, for its having so long interrupted the pleasures of the world. On the contrary, thus much, at least, will be here found, not taken for granted, but proved, that any reasonable man, who will thoroughly consider the matter, may be as much assured, as he is of his own being, that it is not, however, so clear a case, that there is nothing in it. There is, rather, strong evidence of its truth; but it is certain no one can, upon principles of reason, be satisfied of the contrary. In simple terms, this treatise will explore the analogy of religion, natural and revealed, to the constitution and course of nature. Additionally, two brief dissertations are included, which address the notion of personal identity and the nature of virtue"--Book. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2009 APA, all rights reserved)

This edition of Bishop Joseph Butler's [1692-1752] complete works is the first newly edited version to appear in a century, and is the only one to include a single, analytic index to the whole works. The editor's introduction presents Butler's ethics and philosophy of religion as a single, comprehensive system of pastoral philosophy and surveys the vast influence Butler exerted, especially in the nineteenth century.

Included here are all fifteen published sermons from Butler's tenure as Preacher at the Rolls Chapel, the only sermons in English routinely studied by secular ethicists to this day; six additional sermons on the great public institutions; his Charge to the Clergy at Durham, controversial in its day for its defense of external religion; his youthful letters sent anonymously to Samuel Clarke, and the complete text of his Analogy of Religion, an apologetic tour de force, including the famous introduction on probability as the guide to life, the analogical defense of immortality, free will and the moral order of nature, as well as his famous rebuttal of deism and his dissertations on virtue and on personal identify.
Butler's work is among the monuments of classical Anglican theology. He is a major source for work in ethical theory and philosophy of religion, as well as for the background of Victorian literature.

David E. White teaches philosophy at St. John Fisher College and is an officer in the New York State Philosophical Association

"The design of the following treatise will be to show, that the several parts principally objected against in this moral and Christian dispensation, including its scheme, its publication, and the proof which God has afforded us of its truth; that the particular parts principally objected against in this whole dispensation, are analogous to what is experienced in the constitution and course of nature or Providence; that the chief objections themselves which are alleged against the former, are no other than what may he alleged with like justness against the latter, where they are found in fact to be inconclusive; and that this argument from analogy is in general unanswerable, and undoubtedly of weight on the side of religion, notwithstanding the objections which may seem to lie against it, and the real ground which there may be for difference of opinion, as to the particular degree of weight which is to be laid upon it. This is a general account of what may be looked for in the following treatise. I shall begin it with that which is the foundation of all our hopes and of all our fears; all our hopes and fears, which are of any consideration; I mean a future life"--Introduction. Theirs had been a family of men ... until baby Betsy turned up on the ranch doorstep. Now every one of them pulled together to solve a mystery and to protect one of their own. Family first was the Randolph way. It was a code Kathi Sable knew Ryder Randolph lived--and would die--by. And it was why she had to keep her secrets and her distance from the man she'd never stopped loving. Except when Ryder was questioned in the death of a mutual friend, she had no choice but to seek him out, to defend the father of her child. But would he ever forgive her for building a wall of secrets between them ...?
