Son talent avait été reconnu dès ses débuts à l'Académie de France à Rome où il séjourna en qualité de pensionnaire du roi (1723-1728). Dès son retour à Paris, il fut appelé à0répondre aux grandes commandes de la noblesse et de la cour, peignant pour Versailles, Marly et Fontainebleau, pour l'hôtel de Soubise et la Bibliothèque royale, pour les manufactures de Beauvais et des Gobelins.0
