The life of John Sterling by Thomas Carlyle( Book )

1 edition published in 1851 in English and held by 118 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Thomas Carlyle undertook this biography of his friend, the British author John Sterling (1806 1844), because he was so dissatisfied with an earlier biography of Sterling by Julius Charles Hare. Sterling was an ordained curate at Hurstmonceux, but retired and began writing. His highest literary achievements were the articles he published in Blackwood's Magazine such as, The Onyx Ring and The Palace of Morgana. Carlyle's biography has since become a classic and is studied more as a work of Carlyle than the life of Sterling

A shadow of Dante : being an essay towards studying himself, his world, and his pilgrimage by Maria Francesca Rossetti( Book )

1 edition published in 1871 in English and held by 79 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

'Any acquaintance with a work so sublime must needs be better than none. A shadow may win the gaze of some who never looked upon the substance.' In this scholarly introduction to the Divine Comedy, Maria Francesca Rossetti (1827-76) urges readers not to be put off by Dante's difficult language and befuddling cosmology. Deploying prose summaries alongside translated extracts of the poem, she takes the reader on a tour through Dante's world, from the first shadowy appearance of Virgil to the pilgrimage through Paradise. Rossetti also illuminates many aspects of the poem usually considered impenetrable by its English readership. Among them are the geography of the landscape, the connotations of the most significant Italian images, and the incorporation of the classical vision of Hell into the Christian version. Maps, textual annotations and thorough linguistic notes support her exegesis, which, though originally published in 1871, remains one of the finest available today

Essays by Ralph Waldo Emerson( Book )

1 edition published in 1906 in English and held by 75 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This collection of Emerson's essays covers the contents of two volumes originally published in 1841 and 1844. Annotation. Our most eloquent champion of individualism, Emerson acknowledges at the same time the countervailing pressures of society in American life. Even as he extols what he called "the great and crescive self," he dramatizes and records its vicissitudes. Here is a collection of his classic essays, including the exhortation to "Self-Reliance" and the embattled realizations of "Circles" and "Experience." Here, too, are his wide-ranging discourses on history, art, politics, nature, friendship, love, and much more. For the first time, the authoritative editions of works by major American novelists, poets, scholars, and essayists collected in the hardcover volumes of The Library of America are being published singly in a series of handsome and durable paperback books. A distinguished author has contributed an introduction for each volume, which also includes a detailed chronology of the author's life and career, an essay on the choice of the text, and notes
