Daubigny and impressionism by Frances Fowle( Book )

1 edition published in 2016 in English and held by 43 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Known today for his atmospheric views of the river Oise, Charles Francois Daubigny was a pioneer of modern landscape painting and an important precursor of French Impressionism. Although commercially highly successful he was often criticised for his broad, sketch-like handling and unembellished view of nature, and was dubbed the leader of 'the school of the impression'. As a result he drew the attention of the next generation of artists, among them Claude Monet and Vincent van Gogh, who were inspired by Daubigny's frank naturalism, bold compositions and technical innovations. Theirs was an artistic dialogue which spanned thirty years, from the early 1860s to the end of Van Gogh's short life
The mysteries of Paris by Eugène Sue( Book )

Sensational, engrossing, and heartbreaking, The Mysteries of Paris is doubtless one of the most entertaining and influential works to emerge from the nineteenth century. It was one of Frances first serial novels, and for sixteen months, Parisians rushed in droves to the newsstands each week for the latest installment. Eugène Sues intricate melodrama unfolds around a Paris where, despite the gulf between them, the fortunes of the rich and poor are inextricably tangled. The suspenseful story of Rodolphe, a magnetic hero of noble heart and shadowy origins, was spun out over 150 issuesgarnering wild popularity, influencing political change, and inspiring a raft of successors, includingLes Misérables and The Count of Monte Cristo. At long last, this lively translation makes the riveting drama of Sues classic available to a new century of readers

Old-fashioned pictorial borders by Charles François Daubigny( Book )

This superb collection is a reproduction of 60 plates from the lavishly illustrated three-volume set Chants et Chansons Populaires de la France, first published in Paris during the early 1840s. Generally regarded as one of the finest illustrated books of the Romantic period, it is often compared with the masterpieces of 18th-century book illustration. In this rare French edition, pages of commentary and musical arrangements accompany the exquisite engravings. The original French texts of the songs, bordered by these lovely 19th-century illustrations, have been omitted here. What is left are unique vignette borders that may be used in a wide variety of graphic projects. The selection of these 60 plates has been made with an eye toward retaining the finest works from the original collection and providing those designs that will best serve the needs of today's artists and designers
