"Le Traité de physique de Jacques Rohault (1618-1672) a été publié pour la première fois en français en 1671. Son auteur, conférencier renommé, était réputé cartésien et cet ouvrage avait pour ambition d{u2019}assurer le succès de la physique cartésienne au détriment de la physique aristotélicienne qui continuait à être enseignée dans les institutions officielles, c'est-à-dire dans les universités et les collèges, de jésuites notamment. L'ouvrage a bâti sa réputation sur le talent dont a fait preuve Rohault pour exposer de façon simple, claire et ordonnée la physique de Descartes, à laquelle il n'a pas hésité cependant à joindre les découvertes les plus récentes accomplies dans le champ de la physique depuis la mort du philosophe. Le Traité de physique a connu immédiatement un succès considérable. Traduit sur le champ en latin et en anglais, il a été plusieurs fois réédité, jusqu'en 1730. Durant plus de soixante ans, jusqu'à ce que de nouveaux ouvrages n'intègrent à leur tour les acquisitions les plus récentes d'un champ disciplinaire en constant développement, il a fait office de manuel de physique pour une grande partie de l'Europe savante. Il était par conséquent tout à fait nécessaire de rendre à nouveau accessible aux chercheurs un ouvrage qui a joué un rôle majeur dans l'histoire de la pensée philosophique et scientifique et dont on n'a encore épuisé ni la signification ni la portée. Cette réédition s'adresse aussi bien aux historiens de la philosophie qu'aux historiens des sciences. Elle est précédée d'une introduction de Simone Mazauric qui situe la place du Traité de physique dans l'histoire de la diffusion du cartésianisme, et rappelle la configuration historique singulière dans laquelle l'ouvrage est paru."--P.
