The origin of civilisation and the primitive condition of man by John Lubbock ( Book )
133 editions published between 1870 and 2014 in English and Undetermined and held by 1,476 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"In the present volume, which is founded on a course of lectures delivered at the Royal Institution in the spring of 1868, I propose more particularly to describe the social and mental condition of savages, their art, their systems of marriage and of relationship, their religions, language, moral character, and laws. Subsequently I shall hope to publish those portions of my lectures which have reference to their houses, dress, boats, arms, implements, &c. From the very nature of the subjects dealt with in the present volume, I shall have to record many actions and ideas very abhorrent to us; so many, in fact, that if I pass them without comment or condemnation, it is because I am reluctant to fatigue the reader by a wearisome iteration of disapproval. In the chapters on Marriage and Religion more especially, though I have endeavoured to avoid everything that was needlessly offensive, still it was impossible not to mention some facts which are very repugnant to our feelings. Yet were I to express my sentiments in some cases, silence in others might be held to imply indifference, if not approval"--Préf

Ants, bees, and wasps; a record of observations on the habits of the social Hymenoptera by John Lubbock ( Book )
145 editions published between 1881 and 2012 in 3 languages and held by 961 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"This volume contains the record of various experiments made with ants, bees, and wasps during the past ten years. Other occupations and many interruptions, political and professional, have prevented me from making them so full and complete as I had hoped. My parliamentary duties, in particular, have absorbed most of my time just at the season of year when these insects can be most profitably studied. I have, therefore, whenever it seemed necessary, carefully recorded the month during which the observations were made; for the instincts and behavior of ants, bees, and wasps are by no means the same throughout the year. My object has been not so much to describe the usual habits of these insects as to test their mental condition and powers of sense." (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)

On the senses, instincts, and intelligence of animals, with special reference to insects by John Lubbock ( Book )
39 editions published between 1888 and 1908 in English and held by 452 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"In the present volume I have collected together some of my recent observations on the senses and intelligence of animals, and especially of insects. While attempting to understand the manners and customs, habits and behaviour, of animals, as well as for the purpose of devising test experiments, I have found it necessary to make myself acquainted as far as possible with the mechanism of the senses, and the organs by means of which sensations are transmitted. I have accordingly attempted to give, very briefly, some idea of the organs of sense, commencing in each case with those of man himself"--Preface. "The most important thing to learn in life, is how to live. There is nothing men are so anxious to keep as life, and nothing they take so little pains to keep well. Thus begins this book by the Right Honorable Sir John Lubbock. Topics addressed in the sermon-like chapters include Lubbock's views on tact, money matters, recreation, health, education (national as well as self-education), libraries, reading, patriotism, citizenship, social life, industry, faith, hope, charity, character, peace, happiness, and religion."
