An inexplicable decline in the birth-rate leads to an investigation and the discovery that the water of Great Britain has been treated with a substance that has left nearly 100% of British women sterile. The country faces total collapse under the effects of a population implosion. Dr. John Bart, Minister of Health, is forced to ruthless and totalitarian measures in the face of a growing violence and anarchy. His wife, along with other fertile women, is consigned to a breeding camp, where potential mothers are kept under heavy guard, and where they will bear -- thanks to fertility drugs -- litters of children. What can be the outcome of this desperate experiment?

The 22nd Century. Dr. Charles Forbin is Earth's most powerful man. As mediator between Colossus, the Super Computer, and the rest of humanity, Forbin holds the key to Earth's fate. When Colossus, an awe-inspiring technological creation, suddenly became self-aware and took upon itself the task of righting humanity's wrongs with no regard for humans themselves, Forbin intervened. He took the decision to turn off his great machine-but could not do it alone. Forbin called upon invaders from Mars. The Martians did their fastidious work, shutting down Colossus. The Earth descended into chaos. Rival factions sparred for supremacy, with only Forbin to control the populace and maintain order. But now, the Martians have returned. And they want compensation. Forbin is asked to design a super Collector in order to solidify the Earth's supply of oxygen-or, a large proportion of it-to be handed over to the Martians. But to do so would condemn the lives of hundreds of millions of Earth's inhabitants. There is only one entity on Earth with the power to stop the Martians...'olossus must return

The fall of colossus by D. F Jones( )

1 edition published in 2017 in English and held by 11 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The hugely powerful and pervasive presence of the Colossus supercomputer mechanically runs Earth and its myriad operations. Managed by its creator, Dr. Charles Forbin, it is incapable of lies and void of human emotion. It is not a robot and not human. As part of its brief to enhance the human race, it runs eerie emotion research centers, authorizing acts of savagery to measure resistance and feeling. Art and abstract creation are banned, and surveillance is constant. No one is free. The power of Colossus is spiraling out of control. The Sect worship it as a God, enforcing its word at every opportunity and seeking out traitors. The Fellowship secretly oppose it as a force of evil, and they risk their lives in a concentrated effort to destroy it and escape its domination. Meanwhile, as Forbin becomes increasingly disillusioned with what he has unleashed on the world, his wife, Cleo, becomes distant, with disastrous consequences

"The ultimate computer creates the ultimate terror in this chillingly real sci-fi suspense thriller. When electronic genius Charles Forbin creates a massive computer complex that is capable of independently regulating the national defense of the United States, it appears that no enemy will ever be able to penetrate its sovereign borders. But such a promising thought turns into a stunning nightmare when it's discovered the Russians have built an equally sophisticated computer and that these two 'doomsday machines' have linked, sharing classified information and top secrets. Desperately, Forbin and his Soviet counterparts try to stop the all-knowing 'monster' computers from seizing command of the world's nuclear missile stockpiles"--Container
A reinforced neoprene rubber boot for the barrel-stave flextensional projector by Defence Research Establishment Atlantic( Book )

2 editions published in 1995 in English and held by 3 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The barrel-stave flextensional projector is an experimental underwater sound source that has been investigated for low frequency active sonar applications. One problem with the projector is that key performance parameters such as acoustic power and resonance frequency change with depth. This paper describes an investigation to test the hypothesis that the depth effects are produced when hydrostatic pressure causes an interaction between the projector's vibrating staves and its protective rubber boot. The hypothesis was tested by redesigning the boot so that it is more difficult to deform. Calibrations were performed at three different depths using two neoprene boots, a simple cylindrical boot and a rubber reinforced boot. Results presented show the effect of the reinforced boots on the depth dependence of the key parameters of the projector
