"One of the most influential landscape and garden designers of the twentieth century, Roberto Burle Marx has inspired generations of gardens around the world. His sweeping forms and painterly approach to planting were revolutionary when they first came to public attention in the 1930s, and many contemporary designs owe his vision a great debt." "Publications on Burle Marx have been few, despite his world renown. This book, the product of one of his most passionate admirers - herself a practicing landscape architect - is the first major publication in a decade. Before his death, the author worked closely with Burle Marx during the writing of this book, giving her unique insight into the life, ideas, and work that are outlined in the introduction. The core of the book is twenty-six projects, presented through plans - some redrawn from Marx's originals for the first time - specially commissioned photographs, planting schemes, and some of Burle Marx's own paintings. An extensive reference section includes an exhaustive chronology and bibliography." "This illustrated book demonstrates the sources of Roberto Burle Marx's reputation as one of the great landscape architects of the last century. At a time when landscape design is more lively and influential than ever, this tribute to an acknowledged master of modern design is destined to inspire gardens and landscape design for years to come."--BOOK JACKET

Roberto Burle Marx : the modernity of landscape by Roberto Burle Marx ( Book )
3 editions published in 2011 in English and held by 11 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Roberto Burle Marx (Sao Paulo, 1909-Rio de Janeiro, 1994) is known as a landscape architect, but also as a painter, botanist, gardener, chef and jewellery designer. He considered the garden to be one of the fine arts, as the adaptation of the biome to civilisation's natural requirements." This book introduces the realm of the full sensory experience. Burle Marx's work with plants becomes highly pictorial-everything is drawn, coloured and constructed. In this symbiosis between aesthetics and botany, Burle Marx is the master of both species and spaces. His work is the embodiment of the "nature-city," a concept developed from the garden cities of the late 19th century, which has become compromised in the 21st century due to the compact city model. This new publication focuses on Burle Marx's scientific interest in the landscape and his relationship with the environment. Concepts that continue to be of major significance in contemporary landscape architecture, such as ecology, garden as an art form and landscape design in the urban structure, are some of the subjects the book deals with. The visual information of the book is complemented by the texts by Fares El-Dahdah, Francis Rambert, Jacques Leenhardt, Jose Tabacow, Lelia Coelho Frota, Andre Correa do Lago, Dorothee Imbert, Valerie Fraser and Gilles Clement

"In Roberto Burle Marx in Caracas: Parque del Este, 1956-1961, Anita Berrizbeitia goes beyond the common formal analysis of his designs to explore the multiple contexts and cultural conditions that give rise to his uncompromising vision for gardens and landscapes. She charts a middle ground for the interpretation of built landscapes that explores the various ways in which the complex web of political and socioeconomic circumstances and Burle Marx's personal aesthetic intersect in the making of landscapes, Roberto Burle Marx in Caracas is the only in-depth study of this major site, a two-hundred-acre urban park built between 1956 and 1961, and offers an approach for future studies of the Venezuelan and Latin American landscape."--BOOK JACKET
