Hans Hofmann (1880-1966) is one of the most important figures of postwar American art, for both his own abstract paintings and his influence as the legendary teacher of generations of artists in Germany, New York, and Provincetown. His presence in New York, a link to Wassily Kandinsky, the Cubists, and Fauves, catalyzed the movement ultimately known as Abstract Expressionism, whose influence still pervades the aesthetic categories and practices of art today

"A vibrant collective portrait of the legendary figures who powered the tumultuous post-war New York art scene ... De Antonio shows artists (and their critics and patrons) gossiping, drinking, and talking about life and art, and in the process illuminates the genesis of Abstract Expressionism. Footage of the Metropolitan Museum of Art's landmark exhibition New York Painting and Sculpture 1940-1970 supplement the film."--Container
Hans Hofmann : a retrospective by Karen Wilkin ( Book )
10 editions published between 2003 and 2004 in English and held by 385 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"The selection of seventy paintings featured here highlight every stage of Hans Hofmann career, with a generous selection from his major works of the 1960s. His extraordinary use of rich, vibrant colors in striking structural compositions distinguish him as a modern master. As a teacher, he brought to America knowledge of the work of European modernists (he had met Picasso, Braque, and Matisse in Paris, where he studied as a young man), and developed his own philosophy of art, which he expressed in numerous essays. One of these statements - which counts among the most important of his discussions on the role of color in painting - is included here

Hans Hofmann (1880-1966) is one of the most important abstract painters of the twentieth century. Born in Weissenburg, Germany, he attended Moritz Heymann's private art school in Munich, after which he relocated to Paris, where he took classes at the Ecole de la Grande Chaumière and met artists such as Pablo Picasso, Georges Braque, and Juan Gris. He was a friend of Robert Delaunay's, whose color compositions impressed him as much as the work of the Cubists. Hofmann established himself in the United States in 1932, where he ultimately exercised crucial influence over an entire generation of postwar American artists through his art schools in New York and Provincetown. He is regarded as a catalyst of Abstract Expressionism, and influenced painters such as Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning, Philip Guston, Robert Motherwell, and Barnett Newman. This publication presents the life and work of Hans Hofmann and sheds light on his theories of art.0Exhibition: Museum Pfalzgalerie, Kaiserslautern, Germany (09.03.-16.06.2013)
