A history of Ireland in the eighteenth century by William Edward Hartpole Lecky( Book )

536 editions published between 1878 and 2011 in 3 languages and held by 2,892 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

W.E.H. Lecky (1838-1903) was one of the most distinguished Victorian historians. He was unusual in the extent to which he made use of archival sources, and noted for his ability of do justice to both sides of an argument. His History of Ireland in the Eighteenth Century was first published as part of A History of England in the Eighteenth Century, but was reissued in 1892 as a five-volume work. He has been described as the first revisionist Irish historian, as the aim of the book was partly to respond to Froude's The English in Ireland in
History of European morals from Augustus to Charlemagne by William Edward Hartpole Lecky( Book )

360 editions published between 1869 and 2012 in 5 languages and held by 2,430 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This book examines the history of European morals. It focuses on the period of time from Augustus to Charlemagne. The first chapter in this volume examines the nature of the moral ideal that the new religion, Christianity, introduced, and also the methods by which it attempted to realise it. And at the very outset of this enquiry it is necessary to guard against a serious error. It is common with many persons to establish a comparison between Christianity and Paganism, by placing the teaching of the Christians in juxtaposition with corresponding passages from the writings of Marcus Aurelius or Seneca, and to regard the superiority of the Christian over the philosophical, teaching as a complete measure of the moral advance that was effected by Christianity. But a moment's reflection is sufficient to display the injustice of such a conclusion. The ethics of Paganism were part of a philosophy. The ethics of Christianity were part of a religion. In the second chapter in this Volume II, the author examines the position assigned to women in the community, and to the virtues and vices that spring directly from the relations of the sexes. The two first steps which are taken towards the elevation of woman are probably the cessation of the custom of purchasing wives, and the construction of the family on the basis of monogamy. In the first periods of civilisation, the marriage contract was arranged between the bridegroom and the father of the bride, on the condition of a sum of money being paid by the former to the latter." 11 editions published between 1903 and 2012 in English and held by 44 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Experience in lecturing on Philosophy has convinced me that students learn far more by reading a standard work than by studying a handbook. The first chapter of 'The History of European Morals' is in every way suitable both to students who are beginning to attend a course of lectures and to those who are wise enough to pursue some branch of liberal culture in their hours of leisure. I often wished that it could be had in an inexpensive form with some help in the way of introduction and notes, and Mr. Lecky has very kindly given me permission to make use of this valuable chapter. I have therefore attempted to give a preliminary survey of English Ethics in order that the student may be able to understand the text without the labour and expense of consulting bulky volumes of philosophy. This labour would be unprofitable to a beginner. Mr. Lecky has pursued the first method, and I have tried to bring his work into the hands of those who wish to learn and to think"--Preface.
