The long affair : Thomas Jefferson and the French Revolution, 1785-1800 by Conor Cruise O'Brien( Book )

15 editions published between 1996 and 2015 in English and held by 1,136 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Certain to be as controversial and explosive as it is elegant and learned, The Long Affair is Conor Cruise O'Brien's examination of Jefferson, as man and icon, through the critical lens of the French Revolution. Unable to speak the language, endowed with few close friends or colleagues, and curiously detached from Parisian intellectual life, Thomas Jefferson seemed an alienated and somewhat homesick Virginia farmer during most of his tenure as American Minister to France. But the advent of the French Revolution seized Jefferson with a new fervor, and in 1789 he returned to the United States an ardent admirer and ally of that cause. O'Brien argues that Jefferson, though enthralled with the ideological mystique of the French Revolution, nevertheless retained a shrewd political pragmatism, skillfully exploiting the Revolution's popularity with the American public. Ultimately, O'Brien suggests, Jefferson's egalitarian ideals came into conflict with his staunch political support for the slave-based Southern economy. Following the slave insurrection in Haiti inspired by the French Revolution, his revolutionary zeal was tempered and began to cool. Concluding with an evaluation of Jefferson's current role in the system of American political beliefs, O'Brien seriously questions whether we can sustain Jefferson's lofty status in an increasingly multiracial America, and he suggests a disturbing link between Jefferson's vision and white supremacist, survivalist extremists. A provocative analysis of the supreme symbol of American history and political culture, The Long Affair will challenge our traditional perceptions of both Jeffersonian history and the Jeffersonian legacy

Reflections on the Revolution in France : and on the proceedings in certain societies in London relative to that event by Edmund Burke( Book )

74 editions published between 1968 and 2010 in 3 languages and held by 812 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Regarded as a founder of modern conservatism, Edmund Burke (1729-97) proved an influential yet controversial writer and politician. Although sympathetic towards American colonists in their grievances against British rule, he was later appalled as the French Revolution unfolded. Published in 1790, when the Revolution was still young, this is Burke's most well-known work and remains a classic of Western political thought and rhetoric. He predicts the excesses that will follow the destruction of the institutions of civil society, and the inevitable rise of a corrupt and violent government rather than a protector of citizens. When she read the famous passage describing her flight from Versailles, Marie Antoinette was apparently moved to tears. Sparking a flurry of responses in defence of the Revolution and its ideals, including Thomas Paine's Rights of Man (also reissued in this series), Burke's polemic remains a crucial text in the history of modern political philosophy

First in peace : how George Washington set the course for America by Conor Cruise O'Brien( Book )

3 editions published in 2009 in English and held by 764 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Conor Cruise O'Brien, the distinguished international commentator and author, has been described as "a man who so persistently asks the right questions" (The Economist). In this book, written just before his death, Cruise O'Brien explores the presidency of George Washington and finds answers to the question of how early America's future was determined." "Exploring the dissension between Washington and Jefferson during the first U.S. presidency, First in Peace reveals Washington's clear-sighted political wisdom, and exposes the dangers of Jefferson's ideological support of the French Revolution - a theme Cruise O'Brien first explored in The Long Affair (1996). Cruise O'Brien makes the case that Washington, not Jefferson, was the true democrat, commending his clarity of vision in restoring good relations with Britain, his aversion to French political extremism, and his preference for order and pragmatism over the flaming rhetoric of the Jeffersonians." "The result is a final book that brilliantly displays Cruise O'Brien's analytical intellect and imaginative insight, and compels us to reconsider one of the most formative presidencies in American history."--Jacket

God land : reflections on religion and nationalism by Conor Cruise O'Brien( Book )

20 editions published between 1988 and 1999 in English and held by 697 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"In his usual witty style, Conor Cruise O'Brien illuminates the confusion and conflation of religion and nationalism throughout history, and the enormous tensions produced by interactions between the two." "From Old Testament Canaan to Joan of Arc, from Puritan Massachusetts Bay to National Prayer Breakfasts, he points out the pitfalls awaiting any nation that begins to consider itself especially favored by God. Cruise O'Brien begins his history with the powerful nationalistic forces tied to religion in the Old Testament, which Jesus and St. Paul tried to divert to a more purely spiritual plane in the New Testament." "In the Middle Ages, Christianity took on markedly nationalistic forms as homeland loyalties grew strong: by the fifteenth century the two forces were fused in Joan of Arc. With the Reformation and the development of Anglo-Saxon Puritanism, a more literal approach to the Old Testament intensified nationalism in Britain and North America. Moving to the French Revolution, which led to the most dangerous form of "holy nationalism", Cruise O'Brien examines how the nation itself became the object of a cult replacing the Christian God." "And finally he relates how, in this century, Cardinal Spellman merged religion with patriotism in an anti-Communist crusade that sent Protestants into retreat and a Catholic into the White House. Book jacket."--BOOK JACKET
