Dementia praecox and paraphrenia by Emil Kraepelin( Book )

81 editions published between 1893 and 2016 in 4 languages and held by 624 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The motive for this work was to make the teachings of Kraepelin in psychiatry accessible to American medical students and general practitioners, and, at the same time, to provide a full, but concise, textbook, not only for the writer's own classes in psychiatry in the Medical Department of Yale University, but as well for other American teachers who follow Kraepelin's views. Urged by the rapidly increasing interest in Professor Kraepelin's teaching during the past five years in this country and the constantly growing number of his disciples, it was the writer's first intention to publish a complete translation of the sixth edition of Kraepelin's "Lehrbuch der Psychiatrie." It was feared, however, that a full translation would be too large to best subserve the function of a textbook, and would have rendered impossible the adaptation of the Kraepelin psychiatry to our peculiar American needs. The classification, terminology, and, wherever possible, the phraseology of this work are Kraepelinian, but the writer has taken the liberty of abbreviating disproportionately the description of some psychoses which are of less importance to the American physician, especially the constitutional psychopathic states and thyroigenous insanity, and of laying more stress upon other more important forms, the description of acquired neurasthenia, traumatic neuroses, also the treatment in epileptic and hysterical insanity and acquired neurasthenia. The only omissions are the general etiology, diagnosis, and treatment in the first volume of Kraepelin, but such points as are of most importance have been added to the etiology, diagnosis, and treatment of the different diseases"--Preface. Lectures on clinical psychiatry by Emil Kraepelin( Book )

71 editions published between 1904 and 2013 in 3 languages and held by 435 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This book presents various lectures in the field of clinical psychiatry. It is the author's intent to preserve, in a measure, the impressions of a school term's clinical work. In these lectures, the diagnostic point of view is kept in the foreground, the author being convinced of its fundamental importance, not only to our scientific ideas, but also as affecting the advice given in medical practice and methods of treatment adopted by practitioners. The aim of the lectures is to be a guide to the clinical investigation of those with mental disorders"--Preface. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2005 APA, all rights reserved)

Memoirs by Emil Kraepelin( Book )

15 editions published between 1983 and 2014 in 3 languages and held by 30 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

When Emil Kraepelin died (15. 02. 1856-07. 10. 1926), he left behind his memoirs, which were not published until today. Co-workers and col leagues from the last years of Kraepelin's life and his family knew that such an autobiography existed, but they were not sure whether these memoirs should be made public, so they remained unpublished. At a commemoration 50 years after Emil Kraepelin's death in Mu nich (1976) the descendants, who attended the festivities, agreed to the editors' suggestion to publish the "Memoirs". Through this publication we have been able to learn more about the life of a man, whose work has had a decisive and lasting effect on the entire psychiatry since the end of the last century. When one reads the memoirs, one has to admit that on ly very little is known about this great psychiatrist's personality and path through life and that this gap has by no means been filled by the publica tion of his memoirs. Perhaps this publication will encourage work on a biography, which will give us more information on Kraepelin's person ality, life and scientific work. The focal-point of Kraepelin's work lies in the classification of psy chiatric clinical syndromes, which was developed from clinical observa tions, was constantly tested empirically and was altered taking new findings and knowledge into account. However, the basis of this system has remained unchanged and valid until today
