Hunger and Work in a Savage Tribe examines the cultural aspects of food and eating among the Southern Bantu, taking as its starting point the bold statement 'nutrition as a biological process is more fundamental than sex'. When it was first published in 1932, with a preface by Malinowski, it laid the groundwork for sociological theory of nutrition. Richards was also among the first anthropologists to establish women's lives and the social sphere as legitimate subjects for anthropological study

While there have been a number of descriptions and interpretations of boys' initiation rituals, Audrey Richards's classic study of initiation rites among the Bemba remains one of the few studies to deal in detail with the initiation of girls into adult life.Dr Richards observed the entire chisungu or female initiation rite, an almost continuous series of complex ceremonies lasting for a month. Her detailed description of the elements of the ritual, and her analysis of it in terms of the culture of matrilineal society, have made this a classic ethnographic and theoretical text. Cel
Persons and powers of women in diverse cultures : essays in commemoration of Audrey I. Richards, Phyllis Kaberry, and Barbara E. Ward by Shirley Ardener ( Book )
10 editions published between 1992 and 1994 in English and held by 358 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
This volume presents important essays inspired by the pioneering works of three leading women anthropologists. The title may therefore be read in more than one way. The three biographical essays in this volume as well as the comprehensive bibliographies of these anthropologists' works fully confirm the high esteem in which their remarkable personalities are held to this day and offer material about them not formerly available. The book includes important discussions by distinguished social anthropologists, based on rich ethnographic data, of the many identities, personhoods, powers, and other various categorizations of women. Shirley Ardener's introductory essay places the volume in the wider context of some areas of major concern to social scientists, such as the construction of identities, kinship theory, and the production of knowledge itself, as well as of the particularities of women in diverse cultures

The studies focus on Baganda history before British overrule (1200-1900), acculturation during the subsequent period of British administration (1901-1961), and various subjects in the contemporary period following independence in 1962. The file includes studies of the traditional system of authority and changes in the system that occurred after 1900. Other studies focus on post-1900 changes in land tenure, status, social mobility, and marriage. Two labor studies examine labor migration under the colonial administration and the assimilation of immigrant laborers in Buganda in the 1950s. Other postwar studies include examinations of political behavior and attitudes, changes in occupational structure, and the effect of the Baganda authority system on innovation and change.
