Bergman's fable about war centers on the marriage of two former musicians caught on an island in the middle of an insurrection. Their aimlessness, desperation and lack of courage contrast with an incomprehensible will to live. Based on Sigrid Undset's novel, the narrative follows the young Kristin Lavransdatter after she has been promised in marriage to Simon Darre, a wealthy landowner's son. Kirstin's parents have already experienced the death of their three sons and they are eager to see their oldest daughter well established in a marriage to a successful neighbor in the valley. However, a few weeks before the marriage, Kristin is attacked and almost raped while walking in the forest. Overwhelmed by her experience, she enters a convent.
