The craft was a catamaran - Rehu Moana - and her captain was Dr. David Lewis who took her half-way round the world by starting off in the second trans-Atlantic race in 1964. The crew, who joined him in the U.S.A. was his wife Fiona, and his two daughters Susie and Vicky who, at the start of the voyage were both less than three years old, and later on they were joined by Priscilla Cairns in Valaparaiso. Dr. Lewis was able to make some highly interesting experiments in compass-less navigation in the Pacific. This is also a family story, describing their family life aboard, how quickly the children adapted to the cramped living conditions and rigours of the voyage. It follows their course from Plymouth in England, across to Newport, U.S.A., down to Cape Verde Island then through the Straits of Magellan where the weather was very uncertain. From the western end of the Straits, they carried on through the wild, iceberg-infested Patagonian channels then 800 miles off-shore from Valaparaiso, the rudder broke. After three days of repairs they set off again and made their way across the South Pacific stopping in Juan Fernandez (Robinson Crusoe's Island), Easter Island, Mangareva, Tahiti, Moorea, Rarotonga then to Auckland where Dr. Lewis was awarded the Governor-General's 'Yachtsman of the Year' trophy
