"Fluxus, plus qu'un mouvement en tant que tel, est un état d'esprit, un espace de liberté, de partage, d'amitié, dans lequel vont se reconnaître des dizaines d'artistes de toutes nationalités; un mouvement très international est né autour de cette pratique iconoclaste et très ludique de promotion d'un non-art. Fluxux a des liens conceptuels étroits avec les mouvements qui l'ont précédé: le Futurisme et le manifeste de Filippo Tommaso Marinette de février 2009, le Dadaïsme avec les manistes Dada de Richard Huelsenbecl d'avril 1918 puis de Tristan Tzara de juillet 1918, et encore le manifeste cannibale Dada, celui de Francis Picabia de mars 1920. Le rejet des institions, de la notion d'oeuvre d'art, de l'art mort, l'envie de révolutionner et purger le monde de la culture "intellectuelle, professionnelles et commercialisée" poursuit d'une certaine manière la tendance au non-art répandue chez ces précurseurs. Le mot "fluxus" (flux, courant) a été choisi en 1961 par Goerges Maciunas pour désigner ce nouveau courant auquel il donne un manifeste, Manifesto, distribué au Festival Fluxus de Düsseldorf en février 1963. A la fin des années 50, de jeunes artistes influençés par les enseignements de Marcel Duchamp et de John Cage rejoignent le groupe rassemblé autour de Maciunas et de la galerie qu'il crée à New York en 1961, consacrée à des expositions, aux happenings naissants, à la musique contemporaine, concerts de John Cage, Dick Higgins ou La Monte Young. Après s'être installé en Allemagne en septembre 1962, Goerge Maciunas organise le premier concert Fluxus, "le Fluxus International Festspiele Neuester Musik" à Wiesbaden, qui marque le lancement du mouvement
