Fluxus, plus qu'un mouvement en tant que tel, est un état d'esprit, un espace de liberté, de partage, d'amitié, dans lequel vont se reconnaître des dizaines d'artistes de toutes nationalités ; un mouvement très international est né autour de cette pratique iconoclaste et très ludique de promotion d'un non-art. Fluxus a des liens conceptuels étroits avec les mouvements qui l'ont précédé : le Futurisme et le manifeste de Filippo Tommaso Marinetti de février 1909, le Dadaïsme avec les manifestes Dada de Richard Huelsenbeck d'avril 1918 puis de Tristan Tzara de juillet 1918, et encore le manifeste cannibale Dada, celui de Francis Picabia de mars 1920. Le rejet des institutions, de la notion d'oeuvre d'art, de l'art mort, l'envie de révolutionner et purger le monde de la culture ±intellectuelle, professionnelle et commercialisée" poursuit d'une certaine manière la tendance au non-art répandue chez ces précurseurs
