Bushido : the way of the samurai by Tsunetomo Yamamoto( Book )

"Hagakure ("In the Shadow of Leaves") is a manual for the samurai class consisting of a series of short anecdotes and reflections that give both insight and instruction in the philosophy and code of behavior that foster the true spirit of Bushido - the Way of the Warrior. It is not a book of philosophy as most would understand the word; it is a collection of thoughts and sayings recorded over a period of seven years, and as such covers a wide variety of subjects, often in no particular sequence." "The work represents an attitude far removed from our modern pragmatism and materialism. It possesses an intuitive rather than rational appeal in its assertion that Bushido is a Way of Dying, and that only a samurai retainer prepared and willing to die at any moment can be totally true to his lord. While Hagakure was for many years a secret text known only to the warrior vassals of the Nabeshima fief to which the author belonged, it later came to be recognized as a classic exposition of samurai thought and came to influence many subsequent generations of Japanese, among whom Yukio Mishima was a notable example."--Jacket
Hagakure : the secret wisdom of the samurai by Tsunetomo Yamamoto( )

4 editions published in 2014 in English and held by 195 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The Hagakure is one of the most influential of all Japanese texts--written nearly 300 years ago by Tsunetomo Yamamoto to summarize the very essence of the Japanese Samurai bushido ("warrior") spirit. Its influence has been felt throughout the world and yet its existence is scarcely known to many Westerners. This is the first translation to include the complete first two books of the Hagakure and the most reliable and authentic passages contained within the third book; all other English translations published previously have been extremely fragmentary and incomplete. The principal pillars of Bushido are loyalty, filial piety, bravery and mercy. Yamamoto lived his life based on these principles and was willing to sacrifice his own life to bring them to ultimate fruition once his lord died. However, Shogunate law forbade Samurai retainers from taking their lives after their liege and master died, so Yamamoto became a monk instead--spending the last years of life in seclusion recording his wisdom and insights in the Hagakure for the edification and training of future Samurai warriors in the essence of bushido. Alex Bennett's completely new and highly readable translation of this essential work is the only full version of the Hagakure published to date. Its extensive footnotes fill in many cultural and historical gaps found in previous translations. This unique combination of readability and scholarship gives Bennett's translation a distinct advantage over all other English editions of this work. Reading this compendium of tales of a faithful and devoted samurai provides a unique insight into the nature of samurai service and its role in Japanese history and society until today"--

The way of the samurai : Yukio Mishima on Hagakure in modern life by Yukio Mishima( Book )

2 editions published between 1967 and 1978 in English and Japanese and held by 20 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Written in 1967, three years before Yukio Mishima's famed ritual suicide, Hagakure, the teachings of a samurai called Yamamoto (1659-1719), became a sort of samurai bible and was, seemingly, the most influential book in Mishima's life. Yamamoto's central perception is contained in the sentence "I found that the way of the samurai is death." He stresses that the samurai must perfect his resolution to die for his lord at any moment, and gives much advice on how he must conduct himself, even down to dealing with servants or stifling a yawn. He also laments, like Mishima after him, the decadence of his times - by which he means the predominance of the chrysanthemum over the sword. This book provides fascinating insights not only into the samurai code, but also into the life and death of Mishima. -- Back cover

ASIAN / MIDDLE EASTERN HISTORY. The seminal treatise on the code of the samurai. "Hagakure" is a treatise on the samurai code written by Yamamoto Tsunetomo, an eighteenth-century samurai. It's a guide, organized as a loose collection of thoughts, on how samurai should conduct themselves. This philosophy--bushido, or "the way of the samurai"--is, according to Tsunetomo, essentially a Way of death or dying. This embracing of death with honor and courage is the core theme of "Hagakure"--and part of its allure. This edition, translated by the esteemed translator William Scott Wilson, is considered the definitive version of this classic. No other translator has so thoroughly and eruditely rendered this text into English. Wilson's introduction casts" Hagakure" in a different light than ever before. In Tsunetomo's time, the Way of death was a nuanced concept that related heavily to the Zen idea of the death of the ego
