Electrostatic accelerators : fundamentals and applications by R Hellborg( Book )

3 editions published in 2005 in English and held by 103 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Electrostatic accelerators are an important and widespread subgroup within the broad spectrum of modern, large particle acceleration devices. They are specifically designed for applications that require high-quality ion beams in terms of energy stability and emittance at comparatively low energies (a few MeV). Their ability to accelerate virtually any kind of ion over a continuously tunable range of energies make them a highly versatile tool for investigations in many research fields including, but not limited to, atomic and nuclear spectroscopy, heavy ion reactions, accelerator mass spectroscopy as well as ion-beam analysis and modification. The book is divided into three parts. The first part concisely introduces the field of accelerator technology and techniques that emphasize their major modern applications. The second part treats the electrostatic accelerator per se: its construction and operational principles as well as its maintenance. The third part covers all relevant applications in which electrostatic accelerators are the preferred tool for accelerator-based investigations. Since some topics are common to all types of accelerators, Electrostatic Accelerators will also be of value those more familiar with other types of accelerators

Alpha-, beta- and gamma-ray spectroscopy by Kai Siegbahn( Book )

13 editions published between 1955 and 2012 in 3 languages and held by 16 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Alpha-, Beta- and Gamma-Ray Spectroscopy Volume 1 offers a comprehensive account of radioactivity and related low-energy phenomena. It summarizes progress in the field of alpha-, beta- and gamma-ray spectroscopy, including the discovery of the non-conservation of parity, as well as new experimental methods that elucidate the processes of weak interactions in general and beta-decay in particular. Comprised of 14 chapters, the book presents experimental methods and theoretical discussions and calculations to maintain the link between experiment and theory. It begins with a discussion of the interaction of electrons and alpha particles with matter. The book explains the elastic scattering of electrons by atomic nuclei and the interaction between gamma-radiation and matter. It then introduces topic on beta-ray spectrometer theory and design and crystal diffraction spectroscopy of nuclear gamma rays. Moreover, the book discusses the applications of the scintillation counter; proportional counting in gases; and the general processes and procedures used in determining disintegration schemes through a study of the beta- and gamma-rays emitted. In addition, it covers the nuclear shell model; collective nuclear motion and the unified model; and alpha-decay conservation laws. The emissions of gamma-radiation during charged particle bombardment and from fission fragments, as well as the neutron-capture radiation spectroscopy, are also explained. Experimentalists will find this book extremely useful
Electron spectroscopy for chemical analysis by Kai Siegbahn( Book )

5 editions published between 1968 and 1972 in English and held by 16 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

A report is given of work leading to the development of a high resolution electron spectroscopy. The work started in the early part of the fifties and has now been brought to a stage where this kind of spectroscopy maybe ready for a more general use. The energies that can be measured by present equipment range from 1MeV down to 0.01 eV, i.e. 26 octaves. It is shown that new information about atoms and molecules can be obtained by electron spectroscopy. Samples may be prepared in the solid, liquid or gaseous phase. The material presented is comparatively extensive and the work begins with a general survey in order to acquaint the reader with the main features of this type of spectroscopy before presenting a more detailed account in the chapters that follow. Some results of theoretical work and design studies are collected in appendices together with some tables required for ESCA
