"Source importante sur l'Espagne à l'époque wisigothique et sur l'Église du royaume suève au milieu du VIe siècle, les oeuvres de l'évêque Martin de Braga sont ici traduites pour la première fois en français, dans leur quasi totalité. Martin, né en Pannonie, après une longue pérégrination en Orient exerce son apostolat (552-579) en Galice, dans un royaume "barbare" situé à l'extrémité nord-ouest de la péninsule ibérique: après y avoir fondé le monastère de Dumium, il devient évêque de Braga, puis métropolitain de la province, où il jouit d'un grand prestige auprès de ses collègues évêques et du jeune roi catholique Mir. C'est à ce dernier qu'il adresse la Règle de la vie vertueuse, sorte de "miroir" du prince chrétien idéal, au centre du 'plan d'évangélisation' que semble suivre son oeuvre, écrite en latin: d'abord, trois traités ou sermons moraux fondés sur la loi naturelle (Pour repousser la jactance, De l'orgueil, De la colère), puis, après la Règle, une Exhortation de l'humilité, en tête d'un second groupe d'écrits pastoraux fondés sur la loi divine (Réformer les paysans, De la triple immersion, De la Pâque), couronné par trois poèmes de belle facture, dont un Epitaphium qu'il s'est composé lui-même. Stimulé par ses modèles littéraires - Sénèque surtout -, aussi bien qu'aimanté par l'exemple d'un autre Martin - celui de Tours -, 'l'apôtre des Suèves' se révèle ici à la hauteur de sa réputation d'écrivain inspiré."--
