"En 1753, le journal des décisions du roi Louis XV indique que Joseph Vernet "sera chargé de peindre tous les ports de France". Vernet s'engage alors dans un reportage pictural de la Méditerranée à l'Atlantique qui durera plus de dix ans. De cette commande royale, dont l'objectif consiste à faire connaître la puissance maritime de la France, naissent quinze tableaux majeurs à travers lesquels la peinture de marine acquiert une nouvelle reconnaissance. Précieux témoignage de la société du XVIIIe siècle, la série des Vues des Ports de France est exposée au musée national de la Marine grâce à un dépôt du musée du Louvre.
