Horse behaviour and welfare by Martine Hausberger( Book )

4 editions published in 2007 in English and held by 61 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Horse behaviour and welfare is a major issue as horses are mainly sport and recreational animals where the human-animal relation is essential. Scientific studies on this topic have increased greatly over the last decade and this publication enlightens some of the major issues raised such as horse temperament, early experience, horsing and social management and equine behaviour welfare. Precise studies are described here, that are placed in the more general context of the international scientific advances. Important behavioural aspects concern: how to measure temperament traits and the genetic/experimental influences on temperament, when, how and whether to handle foals in order to improve human/foal relation, the importance of the social environment on the behaviour of young and adult horses. On the other hand, the improvement of equine welfare through better practices is described such as housing design, feeding practices or soc
Energy and protein metabolism and nutrition by EAAP-Symposium on Energy and Protein Metabolism and Nutrition( Book )

8 editions published in 2007 in English and Spanish and held by 60 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book is the result of the 2nd International Symposium on Energy and Protein Metabolism and Nutrition. It presents the latest results on energy and protein metabolism and nutrition. It is oriented towards livestock science but also addresses general aspects of protein and energy metabolism as applied to animals or biomedical sciences. The book is based around the following five key topics: * Nutrition and mitochondrial functions * Regulation of body composition and/or product quality by tissue metabolism * "Omics" in metabolism and nutrition studies * Coordination between tissues for the metabolic utilisation of nutrients * From the parts to the whole or how to use detailed information to answer applied questions Widely different approaches ranging from fundamental to integrative approaches are applied to key concepts of nutrition. Fundamental research is translated into practical outcomes through active links with applied res
Breeding, production recording, health and the evaluation of farm animals : proceedings of the 35th biennial Session of ICAR, Kuopio, Finland, June 6-10, 2006 by International Committee for Animal Recording( Book )

5 editions published in 2007 in English and held by 57 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This publication focuses on the various aspects of domestic animal recording, aimed at improving the management of herds and increasing their productivity. New strategies for recording are illustrated and the most updated technologies are presented, on the basis of national experiences where such technologies are already adopted. Although cattle is the prominent species, two parts are dedicated to small ruminants recording and to buffalo recording. Future challenges and opportunities for further development of ICAR and the definition of the future scenarios in the animal recording sector are also described. A special section is dedicated to 'Improving the health traits by recording and evaluation', where the past and future of animal recording and the use of animal recording data for genetic evaluation and breeding are defined. Another section deals with the 'ICAR Reference Laboratory Network', where the reference systems, the pr
Energy and protein metabolism and nutrition : 3rd EAAP International Symposium on Energy and Protein Metabolism and Nutrition, Parma, Italy, 6-10 September 2010 by EAAP-Symposium on Energy and Protein Metabolism and Nutrition( Book )

5 editions published in 2010 in English and held by 50 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Energy and Protein Metabolism and Nutrition is of increasing importance as greater efficiency and health benefits are sought in feed for animal production. Top scientists from around the world have collaborated in this book to exchange expertise and knowledge on the latest developments in the field. The topics range from tissue metabolism and regulation mechanisms to practical aspects of energy and protein nutrition and feeding. A better and deeper understanding of nutrient metabolism and nutrition can only be achieved by integrating the outcomes of scientists researching different aspects of this topic. In doing this practical outcomes are sought for the direct benefit of producers and consumers. Special topics such as the links between energy/protein metabolism and nutrition regarding food quality, nutrigenomics, environmental sustainability and animal welfare in relation to the topic are all explored. This book is a valuable resource to all resea
The impact of nutrition on the health and welfare of horses : 5th European Workshop Equine Nutrition : Cirencester, United Kingdom, 19-22 September 2010 by European Workshop on Equine Nutrition( Book )

3 editions published in 2010 in English and held by 45 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The impact of nutrition on the health and welfare of the horse, whether performing at the highest athletic level or for leisure use, cannot be underestimated. To maintain good health and optimum performance the horse requires much more than just the correct levels of nutrients. In addition to avoiding an excess or a deficiency of nutrients the 'packaging' and form in which the horse ingests these nutrients plays an important role both for the horse’s body and mind. Incorrect nutrition contributes to occurrence of colic, obesity, metabolic syndrome, laminitis, rhabdomyolisis and stereotypic, abnormal or unwanted behaviours. This book explores the impact of nutrition on health and welfare in horses. The chapters provide an up to date review and evaluation of our current understanding in the areas below. -Nutritional requirements and physiology -Nutrition, behaviour and welfare -Promoting health and preventing disease -Gastrointestinal health -M
Energy and protein metabolism and nutrition in sustainable animal production : 4th International Symposium on Energy and Protein Metabolism and Nutrition, Sacramento, California, USA, 9-12 September 2013 by James W Oltjen( Book )

3 editions published in 2013 in English and held by 33 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

As world population increases, demand for food and particularly animal products is expected to grow substantially. Because of limited area for expansion of animal agriculture and growing consumer concern for the environmental impact of animal production, gains in animal efficiency will have to be part of the solution. This book addresses key issues of how energy and protein are utilized and interact in farm animals from the molecular to the whole animal and even to the herd or group level of organization. It contains state-of-the-art research and reviews on several topics of nutrient utilization and metabolism from top scientists worldwide. Key issues addressed include energy/protein interactions, methodology such as in vitro and in vivo techniques, regulation including pre-natal programming and endocrine regulation, modeling and systems biology (including a tribute to the late Professor R. Lee Baldwin of the University of California, Davis, a leader in the field), products and health of animals, tissue metabolism, and environmental sustainability in agriculture. This book is a valuable resource for researchers, students, policy makers, producers and industry professionals believing that a better understanding of metabolism and nutrition of farm animals is part of the solution
New trends for innovation in the Mediterranean animal production by R Bouche( Book )

3 editions published in 2011 in English and held by 25 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The Mediterranean area shows a great diversity of livestock systems, depending on local resources and traditions, but also on the networking space where informational resources are available for producers. During the last decades, a lot of innovations have been conceived or introduced in the Mediterranean area, allowing livestock systems to remain competitive. The book looks at two main issues: firstly, it gives an updated review on the main innovations that significantly changed the activities of livestock production in the Mediterranean area in the recent past. Secondly, the focus lies on the extent to which these innovations improve the efficiency, ensure the socio-cultural basis or reduce the environmental impact of livestock systems. One major finding is a new vision of innovating systems based on the distinction between regulated innovation (when aims are fixed) and innovative design (when aims are questioned). Innovations reported in the book are dealing with a set of concerns. They concern the production techniques, the work organization, the equipment and infrastructures, the collective features for selection, reproduction, feeding or sanitary devices. They also concern the local organization such as product labelling, new dynamics around local breeds, collective rules for supply basin or approaches of new products for new markets. More recently, some innovations focus on environmental impacts of livestock production, due to an increasing consciousness of those kinds of problems. In the final part of the book, a round table copes with a crucial question: are traditions in Mediterranean livestock activities to be considered an obstacle or a source of innovation? This book provides a set of updated information and knowledge useful for researchers, students, extension services and policy-makers in the field of animal science
