Topics in the theory of numbers

(
Book
)
7 editions published between 1960 and 2003 in English and Hungarian and held by 429 libraries worldwide "This unique book is a guided tour through number theory. While most introductions to number theory provide a systematic and exhaustive treatment of the subject, the authors have chosen instead to illustrate the many varied subjects by associating recent discoveries, interesting methods, and unsolved problems. In particular, we read about combinatorial problems in number theory, a branch of mathematics cofounded and popularized by Paul Erdos. Janos Suranyi's vast teaching experience successfully complements Paul Erdos's ability to initiate new directions of research by suggesting new problems and approaches. This book will surely arouse the interest of the student and the teacher alike."--BOOK JACKET.

Combinatorial set theory : partition relations for cardinals
(
Book
)
7 editions published between 1976 and 1984 in English and held by 348 libraries worldwide This work presents the most important combinatorial ideas in partition calculus and discusses ordinary partition relations for cardinals without the assumption of the generalized continuum hypothesis. A separate section of the book describes the main partition symbols scattered in the literature. A chapter on the applications of the combinatorial methods in partition calculus includes a section on topology with Arhangel'skii's famous result that a first countable compact Hausdorff space has cardinality, at most continuum. Several sections on set mappings are included as well as an account of recent inequalities for cardinal powers that were obtained in the wake of Silver's breakthrough result saying that the continuum hypothesis can not first fail at a singular cardinal of uncountable cofinality.

)
6 editions published in 1989 in English and held by 186 libraries worldwide Combinatorics has not been an established branch of mathematics for very long: the last quarter of a century has seen an explosive growth in the subject. This growth has been largely due to the doyen of combinatorialists, Paul Erd & odblac;s, whose penetrating insight and insatiable curiosity has provided a huge stimulus for workers in the field. There is hardly any branch of combinatorics that has not been greatly enriched by his ideas. This volume is dedicated to Paul Erd & odblac;s on the occasion of his seventy-fifth birthday.
