Cet ouvrage devenait ##le## roman-feuilleton exemplaire, faisant loucher Balzac, invitant Féval à le transposer, influençant même Hugo en train de composer ##Les misérables##. Plus que l'intrigue stéréotypée mérite de revivre cette atmosphère très bien rendue, sociologiquement et poétiquement, du Paris romantique de 1830; à ce point de vue, le gros roman demeure l'un des chefs-d'oeuvre du genre.
