Bien qu'il ait été reconnu, à la fin de sa vie, comme l'un des pères du cubisme et honoré comme l'un des grands artistes français du XXe siècle, Jacques Villon est aujourd'hui injustement négligé. Exposé alors partout à travers le monde, présent dans les plus grands musées et les plus célèbres collections américaines, son œuvre, à l'exception de quelques pièces incontournables, est maintenant trop oublié ou incompris. La seule monographie importante qui lui ait été consacrée fut publiée dans les Cahiers d'Art en 1957. En rassemblant quelque 156 reproductions d'œuvre en couleurs et 66 illustrations en noir et blanc, avec une iconographie familiale et personnelle abondante et souvent inédite, due à des photographes célèbres comme Brassaï ou Man Ray, cet ouvrage renouvelle l'approche de Jacques Villon.
