The division of labor in society by Émile Durkheim( Book )

24 editions published between 1984 and 2014 in English and held by 813 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In this momentous challenge to the economic theories of Adam Smith and Karl Marx, Emile Durkheim presents a visionary reconception of the social structures for production and allocation that are the cornerstones of capitalism. He asks how individuality can be retained within the capitalist system. He argues that class conflict is not inherent in a capitalistic society as Marx contended, but that the unfettered growth of state power would lead to the extinction of individuality. He suggests that only in a free society that promotes voluntary bonds between its members can individuality prosper
The gift : the form and reason for exchange in archaic societies by Marcel Mauss( Book )

14 editions published between 1990 and 2014 in English and held by 757 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Since its first publication in English in 1954, Marcel Mauss's Essai sur le Don has been acclaimed as a classic among anthropology texts. A brilliant example of the comparative method, it presents the first systematic study of the custom -- widespread in primitive societies from ancient Rome to present-day Melanesia -- of exchanging gifts." "The gift is a perfect example of what Mauss calls a total social phenomenon, since it involves legal, economic, moral, religious, aesthetic, and other dimensions. He sees the gift exchange as related to individuals and groups as much as to the objects themselves, and his analysis calls into question the social conventions and economic systems that had been taken for granted for so many years." "In a modern translation, introduced by the distinguished anthropologist Mary Douglas, The Gift is essential reading for students of social anthropology and sociology. Book jacket."--Jacket

Politics, society and Christianity in Vichy France by W. D Halls( Book )

7 editions published in 1995 in English and held by 562 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This is the first work in English or French to deal comprehensively with the attitudes and activities of Christians, both Catholic and Protestant, in France during the Vichy regime and under the German yoke. The author shows how Christians reacted to Marshal Petain and the Laval government, as well as to the Allies, the Germans, the Resistance and the Vatican. The trauma of the treatment of the Jews, which eventually acted upon the Church as a catalyst, is assessed in detail since it represented a turning-point in Christian attitudes. This examination of one of history's darkest periods provides a wealth of new material on matters hotly debated at the Liberation: the regime's slide into near-fascism; the persecution of the Jews; the attempted regimentation of youth and trade unions; resistance to or collaboration with the enemy; and the paramountcy of conscience for Christians

The global status of comparative education from the 1960s to the present is presented in three parts. Part 1 comprises a general review of the background to seven regional studies. The review provides a picture of the overall historical development; the modifications in the concept of comparative education that have occurred; the general approaches, methods, and theories that have emerged in recent years: the problems and concerns that have arisen; and some remarks on content and practice. The texts of the regional reports are presented in Part 2. The chapters include: Western Europe; the socialist countries; North America; Latin America; Asia and the Pacific; Africa; and the Arab states. Part 3 deals with the national and international infrastructures of comparative education including societies, associations, centers, and journals and the impact these have on theory and practice. International equivalences in access to higher education; a study of problems with special reference to selected countries by Wilfred Douglas Halls( Book )

17 editions published between 1971 and 1972 in 4 languages and held by 311 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This study of upper secondary education and the procedures of access to higher education is based on research in eight selected countries: Argentina, Cameroon, Czechoslovakia, France, Philippines, Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, United Kingdom and the United States of America. The project was designed to be a comparative study of the aims and content of the programs and syllabuses of the upper secondary schools preparing for higher education in the countries designated. The rationale was to establish whether there might be pedagogical comparability and acceptability among the eight countries. Possibilities of quantification and proposed methodology are suggested. Six key subjects of the normal secondary curriculum were selected for study: the mother language, the first modern language, mathematics, physics, chemistry and biology. Case studies in physics, mathematics, chemistry and the mother tongue are presented. (Mjm)

The education of young people in Europe : developments, problems and trends by A. D. C Peterson( Book )

9 editions published between 1973 and 1976 in English and Japanese and held by 108 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The educational trends identified in this report was those common to the young people of the member states of the Council of Europe. Emphasis is on the three most outstanding trends. The first, the concept of life-long education, involves an extension of pre-school education and continuing education for adults. The second consideration is the adoption of a comprehensive type of common school for the first phase of secondary education. The most uncertain important aspect of the educational process which commonly presents itself is the stage that lies between the common or comprehensive type of school and entry either to full adult employment, military service, or tertiary education at the age of 19 or 20. Other trends are discussed in chapters on the extension of pre-school education; primary education; problems of goals and structures in secondary education; administration, curricula and reform; technical education and employment; the interplay of educational innovation; resources for learning and pedagogical method; assessment and orientation; the training of teachers; school and community; and the international perspective. A concluding glossary records the sense in which certain terms are used in the report. (Ksm)
