History and prophecy: Selected problems in the religious painting of Nicolas Poussin by Erick Francis Wilberding( )

1 edition published in 1997 in English and held by 7 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This dissertation investigates the iconography and context of Poussin's religious paintings, which he made consistently throughout his life and comprise more than half his extant oeuvre. My study of these selected works, together with Poussin's correspondence and biography, demonstrates that Poussin remained in most respects conventional in his religiosity, believing the basic tenets of Catholicism and making no attempt to conceal this from his closest friends and patrons. Often considered a skeptical stoic or libertin, Poussin, for his religious paintings, took orthodox doctrine for granted in his audience and patrons. When confronted with a religious commission, or when he freely undertook such a work, he saw his central task as the representation of the religious narrative as authentic ancient history in a decorous and archaeologically accurate manner
