Ed Ruscha by Neal David Benezra( Book )

9 editions published in 2000 in English and held by 460 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"One of the most consistently inventive artists of recent times, Los Angeles-based Ed Ruscha has been a pioneer in the use of language and imagery drawn from the popular media. From his early powerful word paintings to his influential artist books of the sixties and seventies to his recent colorful views of generic mountains, Ruscha has investigated the spaces between highways and journeys, images and words, abstraction and representation, public imagery and the contemporary landscape. In this publication, which accompanies a major retrospective exhibition organized by the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington, D.C. and the Museum of Modern Art, Oxford, Neal Benezra, Kerry Brougher, and Phyllis Rosenzweig focus on all aspects of Ruscha's career, revealing him not merely as an artist closely linked with Los Angeles, but as an important international figure in contemporary art."--Amazon

Ed Ruscha : ER by Mary Agnes Richards( Book )

2 editions published in 2008 in English and held by 284 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"American artist Ed Ruscha (b. 1937) is a master of creating art that is at once playful and profound. Ruscha's inimitable work frequently involves the setting of a single word or phrase against a stained background or monumental landscape. His paintings, prints, drawings, photographs, books, and films were influential in the development of Pop Art, and his stunning artist's books continue to inspire up-and-coming artists today." "In this definitive overview of Ruscha's career to date, Mary Richards traces the progression of the artist's work across five decades. The book also focuses on Ruscha's techniques, particularly his delicate drawings, prints using organic materials, and process of making art as documented in his notebooks. With stunning reproductions and new interview material, this thought-provoking book probes the internal logic of Ruscha's oeuvre for words, images, and phrases that resurface time and again."--Jacket
Ed Ruscha : Road Tested by Michael Auping( Book )

9 editions published in 2011 in English and held by 247 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Since his first road trip in 1956, driving from Oklahoma City to Los Angeles, Ed Ruscha has continued to muse on America as seen from the road: "I like being in the car, and seeing things from that vantage point," he has said. "Sometimes I give myself assignments to go out on the road and explore different ideas. My books are an example of that." Consisting of around 75 works spanning the artist's entire career, Ed Ruscha: Road Tested includes many of the famous aforementioned artist's books, including Twenty-Six Gasoline Stations, Real Estate Opportunities, Some Los Angeles Apartments, Thirty-Four Parking Lots and the groundbreaking artist's book Every Building on the Sunset Strip; some of Ruscha's most iconic paintings, such as the "Standard Stations" and the "Hollywood Signs," as well as paintings inspired by street names and road signs; and his exploration of the topography of greater Los Angeles in paintings that depict aerial grids of the city, as well as various southern California horizons and sunsets. Also examined here is the rarely seen Ruscha film Miracle (1975), which tells the story of a mechanic whose obsessive repair of the carburetor on a 1965 Mustang dooms his date with a beautiful woman. The first-ever treatment of a primary theme in the artist's career, Road Tested at last gives Ed Ruscha his own road show

Various small fires and milk by Edward Ruscha( Book )

17 editions published between 1964 and 1970 in 3 languages and held by 205 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The most renowned series of artist's books in the history of the genre, Ed Ruscha's works [Twentysix Gasoline Stations, Some Los Angeles Apartments, Various Small Fires and Thirtyfour Parking Lots] still retain their capacity to surprise, delight and puzzle in equal measure. In the several decades since they were published, they have been much exhibited, written about and analyzed, yet they somehow are still objects of mystery and fascination, beguiling in their utter simplicity and immutable rightness. At the time of publication, they were largely overlooked by much of the photography world. The apparent anti-formalism and indifferent technique of Ruscha's pictures were derided; the perfect formalism of each book as an art object was not appreciated. Also disregarded was Ruscha's interest in, and debt to, two of photography's luminaries--Walker Evans and Robert Frank."--The Photobook : A History Volume II / Martin Parr and Gerry Badger. "Many artists use the pain, exhilaration and resolution of private desires to express themselves in their art. This documentary focuses on intense personalities who've used their art to explore the emotional impact, or dark humor of psychological truths. The film also plumbs issues that affect artists -- preoccupations of startling universality -- like community, motivation and controversy, finding one's audience, and just 'getting it right'." -- Back of container
