Statistics by David Freedman( Book )

77 editions published between 1974 and 2014 in 3 languages and held by 1,992 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Statistics teaches students how to think about statistical issues. It is written in clear, everyday language, without the equations that baffle non-mathematical readers. The techniques are all introduced through examples, showing how statistics has helped solve major problems in economics, education, genetics, medicine, physics, political science, psychology, and other fields. --This text refers to the Hardcover edition
Markov chains by David Freedman( Book )

32 editions published between 1970 and 2012 in 3 languages and held by 723 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book, part of a trilogy covering the field of Markov processes, provides a readable and constructive treatment of Markov chains. It contains some of the author's own research and many of the proofs are new. It includes material not usually available in textbooks, such as invariance principles for functionals of a Markov chain, Kolmogorov's inequality on the concentration function, the boundary, and the construction of a variety of continuous-time chains from their jump processes and holding times. Statistical models : theory and practice by David Freedman( Book )

47 editions published between 2005 and 2009 in English and Italian and held by 710 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Statistical Models is a textbook that explains the things you have to know in order to read empirical papers in the social and health sciences, as well as techniques you need to build statistical models of your own." "The author, David A. Freedman, explains the basic ideas of association and regression, and takes you through the current models that link these ideas to causality. He focuses on applications of linear models, including generalized least squares and two-stage least squares, with probits and logits for binary variables." "Target audiences include undergraduates and beginning graduate students in statistics, as well as students and professionals in the social and health sciences. The discussion in the book is organized around published studies, as are many of the exercises. Relevant journal articles are reprinted at the back of the book."--Jacket

6 editions published in 1968 in English and held by 631 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Approximating countable Markov chains by David Freedman( Book )

32 editions published between 1971 and 1983 in English and Undetermined and held by 630 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The book, part of a trilogy covering the field of Markov processes, explains one method of approximating countable Markov chains by finite ones. Intended for use in seminars with advanced graduate students, it is written in the framework of the first book in the trilogy, Markov Chains, although it is completely independent of the second, Brownian Motion and Diffusion. The idea is to skip over the times at which the chain is outside some large, finite set of states. The technique is especially useful for dealing with instantaneous states. Many of the results are original. (Author)
Brownian motion and diffusion by David Freedman( Book )

27 editions published between 1970 and 2013 in English and Undetermined and held by 590 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The book is part of a trilogy covering the field of Markov processes and provides a readable and constructive treatment of Brownian motion and diffusion. It contains some of the author's own research and many of the proofs are new. It dispenses with most of the customary transform apparatus, and the chapter on Brownian motion emphasizes topics which haven't had much textbook coverage, such as square variation, the reflection principle, and the invariance principle. The chapter on diffusion shows how to obtain the process from Brownian by changing time. (Author)
Statistical models and causal inference : a dialogue with the social sciences by David Freedman( Book )

18 editions published between 2009 and 2010 in English and held by 312 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"David A. Freedman presents here a definitive synthesis of his approach to causal inference in the social sciences. He explores the foundations and limitations of statistical modeling, illustrating basic arguments with examples from political science, public policy, law, and epidemiology. Freedman maintains that many new technical approaches to statistical modeling constitute not progress, but regress. Instead, he advocates a 'shoe leather' methodology, which exploits natural variation to mitigate confounding and relies on intimate knowledge of the subject matter to develop meticulous research designs and eliminate rival explanations. When Freedman first enunciated this position, he was met with scepticism, in part because it was hard to believe that a mathematical statistician of his stature would favor 'low-tech' approaches. But the tide is turning. Many social scientists now agree that statistical technique cannot substitute for good research design and subject matter knowledge. This book offers an integrated presentation of Freedman's views"--Provided by publisher
