Space photography and the exploration of Mars by Bruce C Murray( Book )

4 editions published in 1969 in English and held by 30 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The photographic exploration of Mars, and that of all temporally varying planets, is a multi-variable process in which surface resolution, geographic coverage, and observation time are all of importance. Thus, the conception and design of photographic missions is concerned with the balancing of these and other factors against the total photographic data that can be returned from the spacecraft. This paper emphasizes photography as a communication process in which information flows from the object being studied to the minds of scientists on the ground. It attempts to place this process in a quantitative framework, drawing examples from the exploration of Mars but indicating applications elsewhere as well. The concluding section is concerned with how best to proceed further with the photographic exploration of Mars as well as the question of balance between the exploration of Mars and the rest of the solar system. Is zond 5 designed for planetary missions as well as lunar? by Merton E Davies( Book )

4 editions published in 1968 in English and held by 23 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

It is generally considered that Zond 5 is an unmanned precursor of a manned, lunar mission. While we agree with that specific view, we feel there is strong evidence that Zond 5 also is a precursor of unmanned, planetary missions of much greater capability than otherwise believed possible. It is obvious also that a new, larger launch vehicle is now being used for lunar flights than heretofore. Presumably, this is the 'Proton' class system. (Author)
The Soviet planetary missions by Merton E Davies( Book )

3 editions published in 1966 in English and held by 21 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Release of information by the Soviets regarding spacecraft design and intended mission profiles of their Venus 2 and 3 flights makes it possible to discern a consistent pattern in their very large planetary exploration effort. (1) As has been the case with their lunar exploration efforts, the Soviets have placed very great emphasis on an early planetary impact with or without return of significant scientific information. (2) They have utilized a standardized flyby bus spacecraft for all planetary attempts since 1962. This vehicle, can substitute a small spherical entry capsule in place of the camera compartment. The capsule is delivered by a bus-deflection maneuver. (3) They evidently have attempted to deploy at least one flyby camera spacecraft and one flyby capsule spacecraft at each Mars and Venus launch window since 1962. (4) None of the flyby attempts has successfully returned data from the planetary encounter. However, failure of the Venus 3 spacecraft system occurred after midcourse correction but before the terminal (bus-deflection) maneuver. As a result, the unsterilized flyby bus impacted the planet. The same circumstances may have caused Zond 1 to impact Venus and Zond 2 to impact Mars. Soviet spacecraft engineering and operation differ greatly from United States practice, which suggests that there has been little transfer of technology between the two programs so far. (Author)
